I had to do a system restore on my PC today due to a virus (I think) that caused the following :

    1. When I tried to open a command prompt window, the screen refreshes.
    2. In Visual Studio 2005, when I built a (admittedly large) ASP.NET web project, Visual Studio shuts down immediately without warning.
    3. I have MacAffee and the icon in the bottom right-hand corner (system tray) disappeared which must have meant I no longer had real-time protection.
    4. Everything took ages to start, i.e. opening a browser window despite having 3 GB of RAM onboard and a 2.6 Ghz processor.
    5. Sometimes I was unable to shutdown Windows and have to press down the button instead.
    6. Modem dials up but when connected can't see sites or send and receive email.
    7. System restore points deleted (I think)

Everything is OK now I have done the system restore to a point before the above happened but it's probably going to happen again unless I do something.
I am a little disappointed MacAfee didn't alert me to this virus, I did a full scan and it found one small malware app that was of moderate danger.
I am going to uninstall MacAfee and put in AVG Pro instead.
Can anyone tell me what possible virus the above problems are symptomatic of?
Google told me nothing of relevance.

I came across this one before on the job. Does it actually crash explorer.exe? (taskbar and desktop disappear then reappear?). I think it also terminated Registry Editor after 10 seconds. MalwareBytes Anti Malware did the trick, I think it was found in the Documents and Settings folder as opposed to Windows.

Yeah the taskbar and desktop disappear then reappear. I can open folders fine.
I think it's soemthing in the registry, I am going to use every registry scanner I can find and scan the PC with them.

I remember where it was in the registry alright. It was under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32"

One of the values "aux" which should be "wdmaud.drv" had been changed to the location of the malware. Change it back to wdmaud.drv and reboot. If it's not there then maybe the system restore worked and you may not need to do anything.

Unfortunately I can't get into the registry as it does the same thing as when I try to open a command prompt (the taskbar and desktop disappear then reappear).
I scanned with the free versions of CCleaner and Registry Mechanic but the problems I listed in the first post are still there. I installed the full version of MalwareBytes Anti Malware and did a quick scan. It came up with a few registry entries but not in the location you mentioned.
I deleted them but the problems are still there. I am going to do a quick scan now to see if it does any better.
If that doesn't work I will have to go back to a restore point. That fixes it but the problem re-occurs after a certain length of time.

    try this

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you don't know how to disable them then just continue on.

    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

    RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    whatnext.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt log in your next reply.

That solution didn't work too well ActorSeeksJob; when I double clicked on the .exe it gave me the blue screen and some hardware error. Had to restart by holding the button down but everything was OK after that.
Karsini, I eventually managed to get into the registry (after several time-consuming restore points to various locations in time).
I found the entry you mentioned. It wasn't in the exact same location but somewhere similar.
There was about seven or eight values "aux" like you said and all of them except one was set to "wdmaud.drv" (it was set to C:\WINDOWS\system32\..\ioa.rdc).
I changed it to "wdmaud.drv" and XP seems OK so far.
I looked for that ioa.rdc but couldn't find it. I hope that was the problem.
I wouldn't be surprised if it comes back though.

    do this
    • Download OTListIt2 to your desktop.
    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Under Custom Scan paste this in

      netsvcs
      msconfig
      safebootminimal
      safebootnetwork
      activex
      drivers32
      %systemroot%\System32\antiwpa.dll
      %systemroot%\SYSTEM32\wpa.dll
      %systemroot%\setup\scripts\biestart.exe
      %systemroot%\system32\drivers\royal.sys
      %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.
      %PROGRAMFILES%\*.

    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
      • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTListIt.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTListIt2.
      • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Everything was OK last night but the problem is back this morning.
I did what you said ActorSeeksJob; from reading your instructions I had to do two scans, (I don't think that is right but that's what I did anyway).
First I did a scan without changing any of the default settings. That gave me two files, "Extras.Txt" and "OTListIt.Txt" (these are in "first scan.zip")
Then I changed the settings to what you said and ran the scan again.
It gave me the same two files again, which I have saved to "second scan.zip".
I think it is the second scan you need, they are both attached anyway.
    Thanks for the post.

Did like you said, ran the fix and rebooted. On restart, the OTL2 exe appeared and asked to run. I clicked OK and a log text file appeared (I've attached it;it had a .log extension, had to rename it to .txt to upload it).
Regedit starts OK now, but forgive me if I appear a little cautious, I am going to give it a few days and see if the problem doesn't reappear.:)
I'll let you know, thanks for the help, much appreciated.

post a new OTL log as well

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭lukin

Opened the program and put in "Drivers32" to the bottom pane.
Left the default settings as they were and clicked "Run Fix".

Came back with this in the log file:

Error: Unable to interpret <Drivers32> in the current context!

Do I still have a problem?
It seems to be OK, I can open regedit and command prompt windows since the log file:

Error: Unable to interpret <Drivers32> in the current context!

OTListIt2 by OldTimer - Version 2.0.15.3 log created on 05052009_154624

I'll do that stuff you said above anyway.

    6. Registered Users Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭lukin

      I've attached the Malwarebytes log (mbam-log-2009-05-06 (10-32-08).txt) and the Kaspersky report(Kaspersky report.txt)
The Malwarebytes scan found one Trojan and deleted it, the Kaspersky scan found quite a few but didn't delete them so I did that my self. Are all my problems over now?
Btw, how come the Kaspersky program found all these trojans and the MacAfee scan didn't?
Seems surprising considering that I paid fpr MAcafee and the Kaspersky scan was free.

Yikes, seems I jumped the gun a bit;I went ahead and deleted the files that were on the Kaspersky report after my last post.
In order to correct my error I found some of them on a backup drive and copied and pasted them into the original locations on the C drive.
I wasn't able to find them all, of the ones I couldn't find all but three were not viruses but these three were:

      C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20070814-203831.backup Infected: Trojan.Win32.Qhost.di 1
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20071230-135826.backup Infected: Trojan.Win32.Qhost.di 1
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\My_Server.exe Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Shark.t

      I don't know if that's a problem.
The report from the first run of OTMoveIt3 is attached (results.txt).
The log file from after it re-booted and ran again is also attached (05062009_184758.txt)
It failed to delete a lot of temp files, I don't know if that's 'cause I deleted the files manually instead of letting the program delete them.

      your logs are clean

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

      %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

      cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

      • Download OTCleanIt to your desktop and run it
      • Click Yes to beginning the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
      • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. Choose Yes.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.
      • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
        http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

      • SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX, it immunizes your PC against them.

      • SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program ( eg : TeaTimer, Windows Defender ) or there will be a conflict.

      • Make Internet Explorer more secure
        • Click Start > Run
        • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
        • Click on the Security tab
        • Click Reset all zones to default level
        • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
        • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
        • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
      • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

      • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

      • Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
        Here

If you choose to use Firefox, I highly recommend these add-ons to keep your PC even more secure.
        • NoScript - for blocking ads and other potential website attacks
        • McAfee SiteAdvisor - this tells you whether the sites you are about to visit are safe or not. A must if you do a lot of Googling

      • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.

      • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.

      • Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.

      • FileHippo Update Checker is an extremely helpful program that will tell you which of your programs need to be updated. Its important to keep programs up to date so that malware doesn't exploit any old security flaws.

      • Please read my guide on how to prevent malware and about safe computing here
Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Cheers man, you've been incredibly helpful.
I had almost resigned myself to having to wipe the drive and re-install Windows (shudder).
Those OT programs are class, I am going to ditch MacAfee now and buy Kaspersky instead, I still can't believe a free scan picked up all those viruses and MacAfee didn't.
I use Mozilla already,it's not entirely MacAfee's fault I got those viruses as I have been a bit careless in not keeping my PC secure.
I suppose I fell into the trap of assuming just because I had anti-virus installed I had no need to worry about anything.
I'm not surprised it happened, I've been online a bit more often in the last few weeks than I normally am.
      Thanks again.
