Hi all, just thought I'd post this as I'm a little worried about my computer. My fans been blowing at high power a lot lately on my Inspiron 6400 and when i check the task manager it shows that Firefox is using a lot more memory than it used to. I don't run many plugins or anything extra and it happens whether theres 1 tab open or 6 or 7. I'm afraid that maybe there's some hidden process going on. Is there any way I can determine whats using so much memory?

    Cheers

Get the Trial version of Tune Up Utilities. You'll have it for 30 days and that's enough time to give your laptop a right going over.

Do many of the tabs contain flash content (youtube etc)

You could disable each of the plugins one at a time to see if any of them are causing major hassle.

Also have you tried google chrome? I find it is much much less resource hungry than firefox. There is somethings i have to go back to firefox for (Logmein remote control is one of them) but other than that It a really solid browser.

Firefox is a very badly written browser in my opinion , for Windows anyway. On 2000, XP & Vista on many, many different PCs I have experienced very high CPU usage and memory leaks. I don't use it anymore.

Firefox 3 and above definitely is more resource-hungry than older versions.. and that's with very few plugin's (Firebug)!

From the little I've tried of Google Chrome, it's definitely the one to get right now. Shame they don't have a Mac client as of yet (and don't bother even mentioning to woeful Crossover Chromium)

No, most of the time theres no memory hungry things open, that's why I'm so confused. I came back to my computer today after about half an hour to find the fan was spinning like crazy and Firefox was the only thing I had open, with just a simple HTML page open. Checked the Task Manager and Firefox was using 171MB of memory. It used to stay around the 50 mark. Just checked it there and its at 110MB and I've only just opened the browser and only have boards.ie open... Hmmm

Ya I tried using Chrome before but stopped for some reason. Might try it again. I think the problem could be alot more serious coz I think I got a nasty trojan a few weeks ago and my comps been behaving kinda strange ever since. I'm waiting on an external harddrive to come in the mail and when I get that I'll probably just reinstall Windows. Seems like the only way to fix problems this hidden.

Firefox typically uses way too much memory, and it's riddled with memory leaks.

I would normally use Chrome - but video on it is choppy for some reason.

Aye yeah - youtube.. It doesn't happen to everyone, but I had a quick google and quite a few people have had the same problem. Video choppy in Chrome, but ok in Firefox. I'll update Chrome ina bit and see if it happens still.
