The optical drive on most (if not all) laptops is standard nowaday. You should be able to get one handy enough. You usually just have to undo a screw or two on the bottom of the laptop to release the drive.

No bother man. In 99% of laptops it's an easy swap to do. Some can be more of a pain in the ass though that might require you to rip the whole thing apart. That's mainly older laptops, I imagine this one would be a piece of piss to swap out the optical drive.

Not necessarily, sometimes the front bezel which would clip off the old Samsung drive may not fit the replacement drive. I would play safe and try to get the same model as what came out off. Internally and mechanically all DVD/CD dives are pretty much the same.

OK, my brother and I unscrewed the 4 screw underneath the drive....and nothing. The tray did become loose, but the drive itself was solidly stuck inside. There are other screws all over the bottom, but I would presume if I were to take them all off, the motherboard, RAM,etc. would become dangerously exposed, no?

Try searching for a service guide for that laptop on line with step by step instructions. Most DVD Drives are secured by just one or two release screws under the keyboard or underneath the machine.

i recently replaced the drive on my brothers dell lapotop , very easy procedure , just release one screw and in the hole that the screw came out of there is a small piece of metal that the screw goes through to secure the drive , you push it sideways with a screwdriver and the drive pops out enough for you to to pull it out completely.

im sure there are video's on you tube showing how it is done.
