Anyone in Waterford area might be able to add some value to this query, having gone FTA I'm without the Irish 4, I do not want to install a roof aerial if at all possible. Will a typical multi-element aerial in the roof rather than on it work?

If you are in the city, it varies greatly. The higher parts for example grange heights, grantstown village etc may get away with an aerial in the attic.

However, lower parts including the city centre, Johns Park etc will not work, the signal from Mt. Leinister is just too weak.

Remember, you will two aerials and a combiner and maybe an amplifier because TV3 and TG4 are on UHF Group A and RTE1 &2 are on VHF Band III.

In a lot of the city, there is reception of the UK channels from the deflector in Dunmore East. There are vertically polarised on Groupb C/D.

There is also RTE DTT on CH45 from Mt. Leinister

    I'm in Cherrymount.

Sheeze that sounds needlessly complicated. :( Admitedly I never watch TV3 or TG4.

If you are in Cherrymount, you definately need external aerials and possibly a masthead amplifier as well

I've been up in the roof doing a bit of DIY aerial building, not perfect by any means but certainly good enough for the amount of time I spend watching RTE (very little).

bog standad coax cable about 12 metres worth zig-zaged north/south and joined to a length of wire mesh running east-west. I tried N/S for the mesh but not as good.
