Hi i have an old dell inspiron 1100.

Fantastic specs, 256mbs of ram and some pentium 1.8 ghz or some-at loike that processor....

I installed avast on it a couple of months ago and when it did it's virus scan it asked if it was ok to delete some system files....

I said "y" and unfortunately the windows xp which was working fine on it has now since been broken... :(

I've no access to control panel or my computer... And i can no longer install anything or run any programs which aren't web browsers.

Anywho rather than looking for the old xp disk i was just gonna wipe it clean and maybe install linux on it as i heard it can be very good for those more physically challenged pc's...

I'm wondering how to go about wiping my pc clean and which version of linux/ or indeed any os you would recommend. All i'll be using it for is a bit of media and web browsing.

    Thank you and goodbye

With 256 MB of RAM you would probably be best go with Puppy Linux.

You could run Xubuntu but 256MB is the minimum for that, and you might have some problems.

    Zenwalk might be another option:

Don't worry about wiping your disk, the Linux installer will do that for you.

There's no guarantee Linux will run well with your computer, so always try to run a live session before deciding to install.

Xubuntu 9.04 will run happily on that. I have it running on an IBM X20.... with 192Mb of RAM and a 600mhz pentium 3. Just use the alternate install and it'll be fine.

I lived with 7.10 on and 1.6ghz 256Mb laptop for some time with no bother also.

I haven't tried Xubuntu, had to wiki to see what it was..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xubuntu

Xubuntu (IPA: [zuːˈbuːntuː]) is an official derivative of the Ubuntu operating system, using the Xfce desktop environment.

Because the Xfce desktop environment uses fewer system resources, Xubuntu is often used on older computers, systems with limited resources, laptops, netbooks and high-efficiency workstations.

The name Xubuntu is a combination of Xfce Desktop Environment and Ubuntu. Xfce originally was an abbreviation for XForms Common Environment, while Ubuntu means "humanity towards others" in the Zulu and Xhosa languages. Combined as Xubuntu it does not have any specific new meaning.

    Downloading and trying later!
