    Hi,

Most of our sparring is pretty light but occasionally I'll catch a whack that'll ache. As with all of us this ranges from just a light ache from repeated light contact in one spot through proper bruising and up to light sprains.

Now I'm not looking for medical advice but I am curious as to what "stuff" you use to use to help healing?

At the minute I use deep heat rub for DOMS and Arnica gel if it's from impact. Does anyone know of anything else or anything better?

    Hi amadeus,
Its your friendly neighbourhood stalker again :D,
Straight away after an injury i find that Biofreeze is fantastic, you can get it in any chemist at about €13.
Longer injuries I'd use Muay Thai Oil or cream and just rub out the injury.
Don't use any deep heat cream, oil or heat pads for 48 hours after an injury.

I've never had a sprain resulting from training, but I've had plenty of bruising and I always found that sticking a pack of frozen peas on it for about 20 mins from the moment I got home helped a lot. Tough if you wanted to go all out, no expense spared, you could go with frozen sweetcorn.

I find "boxing cream" to be savage gear. I've only ever seen it on sale in thailand or in bridgestone (and not in bridgestone in the last year). It's like deep heat on steroids. You can probably get some on the internet. edit: Yes you can. Here's some on ebay.

My general rule is to stick with the RICE rule immediately after an injury:
    Rest
    Ice
    Compression
    Elevation

Of these, I find the ice has the biggest impact.

Also, anti-inflammatories are worth considering from time to time (ibuprofen for example) but I'd avoid taking these in general and in particular near a fight as they can thin the blood and are harsh as hell on your stomach.

    edit:
if you wanted to go all out, no expense spared, you could go with frozen sweetcorn.

    :D

There's another (very similar) one called Muay Cream that comes in a yellow tube alright. edit: Just had a look and yeah, that's basically the same as the one I linked to alright. They're ever so slightly different, but both like deep heat on steroids. :)

there is a good book available entitled 'a tooth from the tigers mouth',which is written about martial arts injuries and how to heal them, using massage, acupressure and there are also recipes for ointments and salves, made with chinese herbs.

Thanks, I'll def check out that cream. Traditional Chinese Medicine may be a step too far though...!

The sprains I get from a very stupid habit of blocking kicks palm out, which ends up (surprise surprise) with a sore wrist. I knew about RICE and thankfully it's cleared up any sprains fairly quickly. Rather than using frozen peas I soak a teatowel and freeze it. Depending on how wet you make it you can then mould the frozen cloth to fit totally around whatever part of you you're icing (eg wrap it completely around your wrist)
