    Hey,

Thought id post up here see what the story is or if anyone knows a little more about this.

Basically it seems my laptop randomly decided not to boot up anymore.

I let my house mate use it and he says when it was shutting down it just abruptly cut out and now it wont switch on properly anymore.

When i switch it on the screen just stays black and after about 2 minutes it says:

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<windows root>/system32/ntoskrnl.exe Please reinstall a copy of the above file

I gather I have to reinstall windows? however I am actually away for the year and don't have the disc with me.

Also does this mean I have lost all my music, pictures and other files??

Is there anyway around this or anything?

Just lookin to see if there's anything i can do

    Thanks

    See this link here: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000646.htm

Unfortunately I'd say you will more than likely need your OS disk. You should be able to sort it out without losing files.

There is a problem with the windows. You did not lose any data from HD.

I can reinstall your OS today if you want to. I have instalation CD you need.

Nice of you to repair the pc for free.

    I didn't say it's for free. I can do this for €50.

Before you do anything as drastic as that please do the following.

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/termsf/p/fixmbr.htm

If it doesn't work, then proceed with a fix using the CD.

Just bring it in to a PC repair shop, they'll back-up your data and re-install windows. After a fresh install everything will work faster and it wont cost that much. You can buy a 2.5" SATA to USB connecter and connect your harddrive to a PC, take off all your data and re-install but it would probbaly cost as much.
