Have you ran the usual spyware/virus checks?

Also go in to msconfig (Start->Run and type msconfig) and check the startup tab. See if there are any programs in there that you don't need to run when starting your laptop.

I'd be wary of making changes to startup programs if you're not sure what you're doing. Download ccleaner and run that, it's a handy tool for speeding up your pc, and generally works well. As said, try checking for viruses and the likes too.

Go 2 programs, accessorys,,system info, services, there shoud be at Least ,2 or services you dont use,eg,buetooth, remote diagnostic etc, click stop service.go to hardware, system, performance, knock off animations, etc set pc for best performance.VISTA is faster with 2 or 3gig ram,i find winxp faster than vista.UNINSTALL PROGRAMS you dont need, get rid of adobe reader, download foxit reader.does the same thing, reads pdfs, without taking over your pc.i HAVE about 6services turned off.

tbh I've always found the smaller viao's to be slower than other laptops of the same spec, go figure ?

you could try suspending instead of a full shut down

hibernating will be slower if you have more ram simply because there is more to save to disk

sony like most laptop companies love to have a lot of crap running in the background on the off chance you might want to use it. try running msconfig with all the stuff turned off once to see the difference

    hey,

just type 'MSCONFIG' into your program search, or in 'run' and click on start up and 'disable all. should do the trick with the slow startup.

i wouldn't disable them all, op look at the list and uncheck any unnecessary programs.

Disabling them all could cause his anti virus software not to load, and any other programs that could be important

Indeed. I wouldn't go disabling all the startup programs. If you're unsure what to disable post up questions here.

three things i would do is first run msconfig. Only disable startup programs if you know for sure you dont need them starting up. Things like msn messenger itunes. if you are unsure dont uncheckit without asking.
Second thing is download Auslogics Defragmenter, its free. Run this to defragment your drive and free up some space aswell as keepig things moving a little faster.
And lastly download ccleaner which is also free it gives your laptop a clean and gets rid of the stuff you dont need like tempory files etc. It emptys your recycle bin too though so if theres anything in there you want to restore take it out first! This may sound stupid but i told someone before to use ccleaner he used it and came back to me and said it deleted 5 movies he wanted. I asked how and he said they were in the recycle bin and he knew they were there but hadnt taken them out!!
