Yep. When they did their Winter cycling specials there were about 20 people queueing outside Aldi in Rathmines before it opened.

Does anyone know if the special buys apply to ALL branches, I'm closest to the Parnell St one and they only ever have groceries. Cheers

I used to walk up to that store at lunchtime and they always had the specials. Might sell out quickly, but they do get them.

Some people knock their stuff, but I'v done about one very comfortable year (although I'm not a completely hardy winter cyclist) with their long cycling bottoms (about €9- as far as I can remember) and gloves (€6-).

    All still in great condition.

OP thanks for the heads up, I'll pick up a pair of shorts.

The Aldi stuff is decent (I started off in it myself) and fine for stuff like commuting, but it is not really quite as good as even entry level cycling kit from established manufacturers, never mind the more expensive stuff.

Having said that is is much cheaper than "proper" cycling kit, unless you pick stuff up in the sales (which I started doing.) Worth comparing clothing prices on the likes of Wiggle, CRC and PBK though, they can often have stuff reduced. I have really very good jerseys from Wiggle for £6 each, quality shorts from CRC ;20, tights from PBK ;30 etc. Cycleways had Nalini bib shorts for €15 in their last sale. Of course this is time-sensitive so if you need something now and are starting off Aldi is a decent bet if no-one has stuff discounted.

My last piece of Aldi kit (bought all this stuff in 2007) was a saddle bag... Has been with me around 2 Wicklow 200s, along the Camino, up the Pyrenees and Alps, etc., around 25,000km and frequent swapping between bikes before the zip went so not complaining. But the Topeak that replaced it for around £10 a month or two ago is immeasurably better.

    Not Euro:

That pump is a load of sh1t.

The cage with the water bottle is a poor grade plastic. Mine broke the first time I used it. Didn't bring it back, as I wanted to keep the bottle.

The saddle tool bag is very good. Just swap the tyre levers with some out of your LBS.

The clothing is pretty good. I've worn the shorts and jerseys for the last few years, without any problems.

    .

I got a previous version of this last year, but it wouldn't stay on the bike. The slightest bump and it popped off. So the bag and contents are in my backpack now.

Well that's no good. Slightly defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

Mine came with a strap that fastens around the seat post.

Have an exam that same morning, hopefully ppl not gonna buy everything in couple of hours (galway).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 216 ✭✭Chris Peak

Depends what you're looking for. The clothing (jerseys, shorts & jackets) seem to go fairly quickly. The saddle tool bag is next.
They open at 9am so, you should be ok if you get in before lunch-time

I've bought quite a bit of their stuff over the last few years and contrary to a previous poster I've found the quality to be at least the same as entry level branded, the gel mitts in particular are of similar qualty to branded ones costing five times the price. A small word of warning though the sizing on some of the previous stuff was a little odd so try on in shop where possible.

Although I agree with a lot of it I strenuously object to #24 You shall NEVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, associate with triathletes. It is FORBIDDEN to have any number inked onto your body before a race.

Where does that leave gaa players pretending to be triathletes??

    So what yez get?

    Me?
    2 x shorts
    2 x cycling pants :o
    1 x socks
    €36~

Quite conservative for me. Was tempted to grab more in the melee but didn't and only got what I went in for.

I got 2 of those yellow jackets that fold up into a pouch. They seem pretty good.

I stupidly just went and bought the mini-pump this morning. Suffice to say, it's complete s***e. It doesn't even work properly.

I'm sorry I didn't heed the advice of one poster here about it.

    Taking it back this afternoon.

Mini-pumps aren't great anyway, especially with high pressure tyres.
    Really only for emergancies...

Were you behind me at the checkout in Parnell St then at 9:10?
I just picked up 2 pairs of gloves (and 3 bags of coffee.)

I knew I recognised you! One of those "I know I know you" moments. I noticed the coffee alright .

Picked up the luminus jacket, other jacket thing for €22 and the speedometer which looks good for €8 (had to ask at the till for that)

Silly aldi and their late opening times. Will wander through the remains of what's left in Rathmines later.

    Ha! What are the odds?!

popped in to Rathmines earlier and got lots of goodies!
shorts, jacket, shirt, luminous jacket and undies. Got the gloves too but they are very small (definately not a large!).
Wasn't too mental in there this morning @ 9 so there should be a few bits and pieces left this evening.

2 x mits, 1x yellow jacket. There is plenty of everything in westside {Galway} Aldi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 236 ✭✭sexpot

Headed out to Maynooth early this morning, got myself:

    2 sets of gloves
    2 x shorts
    1 x cycling top
    1 x soft shell jacket
1 x saddle bag with tools

    All for €77

Very impressed with all the stuff to be honest, it's fairly good quality and probably on a par with the cheaper stuff in cycleways. The gloves = €20 pair in cycleways at least. Was almost tempted by a teach yourself German set of cd's for some reason....

Worryingly now , so did I !! What's the problem with these mini-pumps ? They looked the business in the box , did you try it out on a tube ?

I'm mortified now. I never noticed the strap before, so I've been carrying the yoke round in my backpack for year. I tried it with the strap today and it works fine, so now I've got that big weight out of my backpack. Cheers for the clarification.

Got a white one since the yellow ones were gone, it's mad tiny!

Installed the speedometer - went to take it out of the bracket - the whole back and battery came out!

Can anyone recommend a decent speedometer? ::rolleyes:

I bought on too, neat for the back pocket if you got caught in a shower so I brought it on a spin this morning and ended up using it because I was freezing, soaked both jersey sleeves in sweat, so rain use only.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 573 ✭✭✭dave.obrien

Jersey, Shorts, the €22 jackets(which i then wore in the rain home, comfy and warm!) and a couple of pairs of gloves. Very happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,423 ✭✭✭pburns

Only got the €22 jacket but that's what I needed most so happy. Not much left on Parnell St by 2pm yesterday...

Sizes are very small. X-Large jacket barely fits me (I know it's supposed to be tight) and large gloves were too small.

interested to know what was wrong with it.

as someone else has said, mini pumps just aren't that good and take 100+ pumps to get anything near working pressure for a high pressure tyre.

Was there any other reason why it's "complete s***e"?

Bought one last year (presume they are the same) and brought it back, it just didn't work.. luckily I had giving it a test run first.

I've got a €30 SKS pump which would seem the same - I think it's just 10 minutes and lots of sweat if you want a mini-pump to work

another thread on the subject http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055559115

it seems to be a trait on these Aldi/Lidl threads that people think that something is sh!t or doesn't work because it's from Aldi/Lidl

The mini-pump thing just seems to be mini-pumps and nothing to do with where it's from and as someone earlier realised that the sh!t saddle back he bought from Aldi a year ago was actually ok once he found the seat post strap.

Nothing against aldi stuff in general, bought some cycling and running gear over the last year or so and its all fine.. with the pump it didn't seal tightly around the valve and I couldn't get the tyre to inflate at all.

cheers - that's the sort of thing I was getting at with the original question - was it a real problem or just a perceived problem?

Maybe you've tried this ... but is it one of those pumps which can be used with both Presta and schaeder valves ... if so ... you might have to open up the end of the pump ... turn around the small bit which pops out (very technical ... I know ... I'm proud of myself .. :pac:) .. and then use for the Presta ...

Went to Aldi in Santry on Friday but they had very little left, only a couple of shirts size L (which are more like size M).So I went to Aldi in Ashbourne on Sunday and they have loads of everything left.Shirts and shorts in all sizes, jackets, glasses, pumps and tool kits.Really impressed with all the stuff, its good quality and great value.
