Just had a curved stairs poured and we are thinking of putting marble on it. Is this dangerous to walk on and what price should we be paying.

Also, we are wondering what are our options for the outer sides of the stairs.. should we plaster this?

marble has been used making stairs for thousands of years,so I wouldn't see any problem.

    plaster away!!!

if your going to the expense of putting marble on your stairs you are aswell to stick marble on the sides will look better in the long run . nice job is to fix mdf on bottom of stairs then sheet it with timber flooring

Currently at the plans stage and am thinking of a curved staircase, the quotes I'm getting for wooden ones are from €15k to €19k - probably red deal as we are likely to paint it white, but have a nice stained hardwood handrail - georgian effect.

Obviously, I would prefer not to be paying this large amount, but would do so if I could justify in my mind that it was the right decision. So to my question - should I consider concrete stairs ? can they be clad in such a way that they have the appearance of wooden stairs? Is this something anyone has experience of ? The quotes that appear on the board for concrete curved stairs appear to be alot lower than the wooden options.

    Any feedback welcomed !

Concrete stairs be it curved or not seem to be a better job in the longrun as well as you never have to worry about a creaky stairs.

Do concrete stairs need to be allowed for in the foundations?

They were in mine so I guess so, the engineer advised my builder as they were not on my orriginal plans

Thanks Leadership. I thought as much, so that might be worth noting that it isn't just a simple job of deciding at a late stage that you suddenly want a concrete stairs. That decision has to me made early.

    wardwil,
Marble is fine for the stairs, I would recommend a honed finish though, Polished finish can be slippy went wet. You are probably looking at prices over €300 / sqm, depending on the stone and how much work is involved.

Thanks Quazzie - In terms of the choice between concrete and wooden, would it be better to make this decision for the planning drawings or could it wait for the construction drawings ?

I was considering trying to polish the sides of the stairs much like a concrete worktop. Not to sure how this would look like though with standard concrete and aggregate used.....

It has no impact on planning. A stairs will just be shown on planning sets, no material, no founds etc. Just wait till construction set is being prepared and decide then based on finances available.

I would say that it can be done, but would be very very difficult. concrete worktops are fairly unrelated to concrete in a traditional sense.
If it was me, I'd go for polished plaster, see below

What kind of cost per square meter would you be talking about there?
