01-05-2009 1:41am#1In the midst of recession and warnings about swine 'flu, a potential new catastrophic threat has been identified in the midlands of Ireland.
Scientists have announced that the clone of Rick Astley known to have been residing there for some time has survived for 18 years, the age normally considered to indicate long-term viability in a clone. "He might survive for decades now!" said one scientist glumly. "There is even a possibility that he might be able to reproduce, though that has not been tested as yet."
The origin of the clone has never been satisfactorily demonstrated, though the most popular theory is that the necessary genetic material was harvested from a wadded tissue found under Astley's bed in a hotelroom after a concert in 1990.
Astley, who is infamous on the internet as the central character in the meme known as rickrolling, was known to have produced many of these tissue-based genetic depositories. "In this respect at least the clone outshines the original model," said the scientist.
Luckily, to date, most of those who have encountered the clone have lived to tell the tale. "I had a very narrow escape", shuddered NUI Maynooth student and part-time retail worker 'Rosario'. "I owe my survival to my dog, who jumped at him and squashed his eh ... well, you know! ... just as it looked as he might start to sing!!"
The clone has apparently developed an intense interest in photography, and is known to have purchased several outsize lens over the past few years. "Every time, a bigger lens," said another of the scientists who have been keeping him under surveillance. "It's almost as if he was compensating for something, though obviously that's just a theory, as we have never been able to find anyone who has any definite knowledge for comparative purposes."
An undercover agent in the local radio station, who has been keeping the clone under observation since he was first identified, reports that he has been known to turn up to public concerts with his camera and start taking pictures. "Luckily, we have been able to keep him off the stage," she said. "I shudder to think what might happen in the future though."
The clone is also known to attend LANs, and some suspect that he has established alliances with some of the other gamers at these events. "Certainly, his true identity is publicly acknowledged at these events," said the agent. "He has even been greeted with the 'Rickroll' played as a salute over the PA system!"
The control team are for the first time appealing publicly to all who may have encountered the clone to report their experiences for their research. "We really need to know more about him. Is he truly dangerous? Or just a genetic oddity? What are his weaknesses? We will be grateful for all information."
In the meantime, earplugs and red-filter glasses are being distributed widely around the midlands as a precautionary measure.
