I'm a student with little money and wanted a new look and thought this might be the answer. Does anyone have experience with these free cuts? would you be able to get your hair cut in a style you'd like or are you at their mercy? and What about the finished product?
I've heard that it can take quite a while which I wouldn't mind if I'm left with a good cut.

Oh and do people tend to tip?

I used to get the cheap haircuts in Peter Marks back in the day when I was a student, you had to get whatever they were doing that day. Nothing crazy but if they were doing advanced cutting you'd have to get so many inches off. Don't know about House of Colour though!

have never got a free cut but have got the student cuts in David Marshall and Robert Chambers. Think its €15 to get your hair cut in the Peter Marks academy.

I generally would tip them because they don't get paid as its like college for them.

I got mine done in House of Colour just off HenrySt, was €18. The girl was really nice, friendly and easy to work with. She did a good job I think, it wasn't exactly what I wanted (she cut it straight across at the back where I prefer it to have an upside zig zag look). The professional did my fringe aswell cos I was a bit worried about it after what happened to me last time I got it cut in another hairdressers.

I've gon eot House of Colour in Liffey Street for the free cuts a few times recently (my hair is short and grows very fast, so was getting fed up paying €75 a go for basically a trim!) I've never had a problem with them, they're monitored at all times, and have to talk their instructors through what they plan to do/are doing/have done. It takes ages, anything up to 2 hours (like I said, I've short hair!!!), but I don't make any plans, and I'd rather they took their time! Also, Every few cuts I go to a professional hairdresser, then the students have a shape to work with. I always tip a few quid, coz I get good service and figure it's a bit of extra dosh which they need as much as me!

    thanks for the advice.
I've gotten cheap student cuts before but I remember that it really helps to have a style to copy already. I think I'll pay this time since I want a new style and then go to house of colour next time. It seems like the people have been happy with house of colour so that's good to know for the future.
Yay, I love free stuff. :)
