Teeth Whitening and Implants

    Hi all,

I know that whitening has been fairly widely discussed on this forum but I can't see a thread that deals with my question..

I got several implants put in as a teenager and they were perfectly matched to the colour of the real teeth. My teeth haven't gotten any yellow-er over the years but now I'd like to have a whiter, brighter Hollywood smile :D

I'm wondering can I just go with a regular over-the-counter solution or would the implants need to be specially treated to change the colour?

    Cheers,
    faoilean

I am not sure that you had implants placed as a teen, as placement is usually delayed until vertical growth of the bones supporting the teeth is complete. This time is different for everybody but is rarely before 17.

You may have had a post-core and crown or bridge placed and are confusing this with an implant.

Anyway, the porcelain of any of these will not whiten (or any white fillings) with your teeth and they may have to be replaced.

Most of the times crowns are rarely natural looking and are normally whiter so it may not make any difference.

You can ask your dentist for specific advice.

    Hope this helps.

Just to clarify, they are definitely implants. I was 19 when I got them but still count that as being a teen :) just! They are full porcelain teeth screwed into metal sockets in my jaw

But that doesn't change your answer. I sort of expected that to be the case but didn't want to waste a dentist's surgery time. Couldn't afford to replace them so I guess I'll have to put up with my natural colour smile for now.

    Thanks!

I have crowns and whiten remaining teeth regularly...

When you whiten your teeth the whitener is sucked up into the long crystals that make up the teeth and actually whiten them inside...to an extent. But the whitener does not penetrate porcelain...

However, over time, porcelain gets lightly stained by tea, coffee etc though, perhaps, not as much as normal teeth? Whitener definately DOES brighten it up for that reason.

You think your teeth haven't got any yellower over the years, but they probably have.

You might get really good effect from an "over the counter" solution that isn't strong enough to bleach much more than the surface of both types of teeth.

Sounds good! Might as well give it a whirl. Thanks aare
