    Hey folks,

Just wondering what oil to use in my Mercedes W123 230C. Got the waterpump changed, topped up the ATF fluid, and all I need to do now is sort out the oil level so all help appreciated :)

Hi I have a 200 (M115) W123 and I would intend on putting in 20W50 (i.e. Halfords Classic oil) but now you have me thinking

I've just looked up my owners manual (also for the 230):

    -15 to -20 C = 5W20 or 5W30
    +10 to -20 C = 10W30
    +30 to 0 C = 20W40 or 20W50(lower temps)
    +30 to -15C = 15W40 or 15W50(lower temps)
    +30 to -20C = 10W40 or 10W50(lower temps)

So I would put in 15W40 or 20W40 or 20W50, whichever is cheaper and more readily available!

Actually, TBH I would probably still get the 20W50 mineral oil marketed as classic oil.

    Still need to VRT/Tax/Insure...

Worried about the classic insurance aspect - had a 100% non-fault accident in February - I hope this doesn't affect me :(

    Looking good.
Do you find the wing mirrors any use?

On my drivers side I can't adjust it to see out far enough, I'm seeing too much of the car.
On the passenger side it's the opposite, I can't move it in far enough to see any of the car.....

Very frustrating on a daily driver.

Actually, the car came with no passenger mirror from factory but I have fitted one for daily driving.

Sound like you have mirrors from a LHD car there mate !

I would use 15W40 on this, 20W40 would be fine really if you have it but for winter or short short journeys I find the former would be better.

Looks like a nice car, red always looks great with chrome.

There is/was? a rough 230C in the village of Athleague in Roscommon, behind a petrol station with at least a dozen Volvo 240 and 740s around it. Pretty bad shape but It had Merc alloys on it. Past it about a year ago, it was still there but there was for sale signs on the premises

That 230C is gone - I used to pass it loads, and it's only gone a couple of months :(

Think I'll go for 15W40 so, ta for the reply. What type - synthetic/semi-synthetic etc??

..........I'd go for standard mineral oil. Thats what the cars were designed with and if you switch there is a good chance you'll develop oil leaks everywhere.
