Anyone replaced just glass and not window frames?

Can anyone tell me if they have ever replaced or are aware of a company who will replace the glass in double glazed aluminium windows?
I don't see it being feasible and reckon it would not be cost effective as our windows are already 17yrs old with condensation between panes of several.
However hubby is insisting that we should look into it!!

sorry your hubby is right. Normally costs about a third of the cost of new windows.
Ask for argon gas filled with k-glass with warm egde spacer double glazed units.
Make sure they pack the glass right (5mm of the bottom of the aluminium) and unblock/drill for drainage.

    sinnerboy (great name),

AFAIK yes PM me and I'll give you the details.

If it keeps up I'll charge him a percentage of what he's getting and pass half it back to Boards.ie to keep from getting banned.

When I get 18mm D/G units they cost me €60 sqm to get gas filled units with k-glass.

So my house has 15 windows and has cost me €750 buy the glass (14mm D/G units with k-glass {no gas, nozzle won't fit into a 14mm unit}) to buy the materials and since I'm in the wood business I was able to route the frames and install D/G units.

    Took me 4 hard days.:(

Of course someone taking glass out of aluminium and uPVC windows and replacing them will not have as much trouble as I had doing the job.

In fact a man could have a whole house re-done in a day ie after the glass is bought.

So if my house had been uPVC or aluminium

    Materials glass €750.

New seal (not sure of the cost but would think about 2 rolls @ €200 a roll would cover it) €400.

1 day to call and get measurements €300

    2 men 1 day €600 to install

Total including vat would be (total guesswork) €2480.5

So frag is correct in his (or her) thinking if various other costs I have not included are included.

We replaced our single glazing with double glazing without having to change our frames. We have hardwood frames and wanted to keep them. A company called Wexford Viking Glass did it for us and we were very happy with the job. They put in Opteshield units and the difference between single glazing and double glazing is unbelievable. We are based in Kilkenny so I think they will travel a bit.:)

I have some glass that needs replacing, and intend to do myself, where should I get the right glass from.

    What is K glass ?

Make sure they pack the glass right (5mm of the bottom of the aluminium) and unblock/drill for drainage, what is involved in the drainage hole ?

double glazed units can,t be just into a frame as the water can destorty the seal in a few years. this is way the windows must be drained and lifted of the bottom on glass packers which are just pieces of plastic.
your glass supplier will have them.

Anyone any experience of replacing double glazing with a more efficient type. I have Munster joinery windows double glazed about 10 years old.

Would something like Viking energy glass give much improvement. Would it be cost effective as an upgrade.
