Irish socialite and former army officer. Born in Donegal in 1985, McBarron was a high jump and cross-country champion by the age of 18, when she won a cadetship in the Irish Defence Forces in 2003. She later related: ‘the first thing they did was bring us into the hairdresser to get our hair cut really short. All the girls did. I was really upset about it….this was very embarrassing and degrading.’
Although most of her cadet class graduated in 2005, McBarron was held back for a year. This may have been due in part to a dangerous driving incident in Donegal for which McBarron was fined and temporarily banned from driving. [1]
McBarron was commissioned as an officer in 2006 and posted as a Second Lieutenant to Aiken Barracks in Dundalk. On 13 September 2007, when rostered as duty officer, she absented herself from her post and spent the night at a Dublin nightclub, for which she was later court-martialled. [2]
Early in 2008, according to an official statement, McBarron ‘made an allegation of sexual assault against a fellow officer in Dundalk at that time, and in the interest of fairness was moved to Dublin while this was being investigated. A full Military Police investigation, led by a senior officer was carried out; however charges were dismissed due to a lack of evidence.’ [3] While the investigation was being conducted, McBarron was temporarily posted to Cathal Brugha Barracks in Dublin. While there, she became prominent in Dublin’s social scene: in June she represented South Dublin in the Miss Ireland beauty pageant.[4] In September she was romantically linked to Irish Olympic boxer Kenny Egan.[5] Although due for promotion to Lieutenant in that year, McBarron remained a Second Lieutenant.
In January 2008, McBarron faced Court-Martial for absenting her post in September 2007. She pleaded guilty to three charges; that of leaving her post without permission, to falsely recording a patrol in a ledger, and to lying to her commanding officer in relation to this incident. She was severely reprimanded and fined 950 euro.[6]
In February 2008, McBarron was ordered to return to her original posting in Dundalk, but instead took extended sick leave. In April 2009 she featured in a Sunday Independent article entitled ‘The C-Listerati’ in which she was pictured wearing a bikini and a ‘halter top and navy briefs.’[7] Shortly afterwards, she resigned her commission [8] [9] and by her own account, burned her army uniform.
She has since announced an intention to study law.
