    Hi,

I am currently inquiring about buying a car over here. The type of car don't really matter, it is just the insurance policy which drives me nuts...

The problem is... I am 21 and my girlfriend 22.
So I'd like to insure the car in her name only to get a cheaper policy.

But I could not find any insurers who had the open driving for young drivers (<25) with Full EU Licence.

Do someone know a good insurer suitable for me ? Thank you very much .

You don't need Open Driving, just get yourself named on her policy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,815 ✭✭✭✭Anan1

Open driving is generaly only offered for over-25s. You could just get named on her policy?

Hmmm, After few quotations, companies asked me about 1500 EUR more to add me as additional driver. As I have never been insured and I'm only 21.

So I'd relly prefer to use the open driving.

Pretty impossible tbh, its over 25's for a reason.

I'm sure there are plenty of 21 yr olds like yourself who have thought of this already!

Some open driving policies require that the person driving has their own insurance policy on a different vehicle...check this out before you get caught out! And I've never seen an Open Drive policy for <25yrs to be honest

If you want to get an open driving policy for under 25s, the insurers will make the natural assumption that there are a number of young drivers who will use the car and charge appropriately.
What have your got against being named? I hope you are not making the assumption that an open driving policy will allow you drive any vehicle other than the one stated on the policy, 'cos it doesn't

    To give you more details,

I'm french and I was driving my dad's car over in France, a 325TDS BMW in open driving policy which was about 700 comprehensive with all cover options a year.

So I know insurances are lot lot more expensive in here but I was just looking for open driving policy as I was quoted 2800 EUR for a 97' 206 1.4L... Way more tan the actual price of the car.

So if I could drive the car without being named on it would be a relief for me.

And do you know whatv I woul risk if I drive it anyway ?

Whoever is the registered owner of the car is the only person who can insure it in their name. To add the facility of having others use this car only, you must be either named or the policyholder takes out open driving.

I must repeat that only the driving of this car is covered with either driving option.

As for driving without insurance here, that would be a disgraceful thing to do

no offence regiss but just shop around for the best policy and pay what you have to. driving without insurance is not on in my view, and to be honest if you do, i hope you get caught.

i started driving at 17 and paid €2700 for my first insurance on a 1l seat ibiza - with a full licence. more than the price of the car too! that's just the way it goes here. either get named on the policy, or just don't drive...harsh but unfortunately that's life!

btw, do you have full licence?

you can get open insurance for under 25's but the policy owner has to be over 25.
did this when me and my 2 brothers were learning to drive aged 17 18 and 20 at the time. I think the policy was with axa. it was expensive but less than 3 young lads as named drivers, but you dont get named driver experience for your next policy.
Try britton insurance for a quote, just check the excess on the policy if they give you a good price could be over 4 grand. Brother got a quote of 800 euro on an rx8 but huge excess made it not worth getting

OK, thanks guys, I'll have to pay the price so.

I have the Full licence , but never been insured on any policies, that's my bad...
And to be honest, I will get an insuance, I wont risk to drive without, don't worry.

Thanks you very much for your help. Appreciated.

Not trying to be pedantic here but make sure you're giving them the correct details...the 206 didn't come out till 98. I assume you meant a 205.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 regisss

Well, it was a 98 , my mistake

Thanks for the numbers kceire, appreciate.

If you say you are engaged or living as a couple the quote should come down. Loads of people's insurance has come down by adding a SO.

Apoloiges for dragging up an old thread.

    I have a strange situation.

I have been positioned for the next 10-11 months in beglium by my company. I would like to bring my irish car. I would also like to be able to drive a car when i come home to ireland (few days/month). So i would like open insurance. I am only 22 and most companies only insure you if over 25.

I understand quinn now offer open insurance to all ages, however they wont cover my car abroad for extended periods.

    😎

Have you confirmed this with them? That would be a major departure by Liberty from the old Quinn system (365 days TPFT, 180 days FC anywhere in the EU, 365 days FC anywhere in the CTA)

Yes sir they say 93 days, and in fairness most of the rest of them are 31 days. Apart from FBD who appear to be as you describe.

You dont need open driving for this (open driving means that anyone with a full license is insured to drive your car); you need to find a policy that will cover you to drive abroad for 11 months.

Have you tried looking at getting cover in Belgium instead?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,773 ✭✭✭poker--addict

sorry yes i mean a policy that covers me in other cars.

belgium runs me into complications, you need to register in the country, you need Belgian plates....

I have found clements insurance, they cover expats, however the car is not covered when i bring it back to ireland. it is a fix for me however i will then need two insurance policies, 1 there and then 1 here on a second car.:(

    😎
