Is it a good time to buy used car?

    Hello

Thinking of buying car to replace my Nissan Primera 2000.

Heard about dropping prices of new cars, still too expensive though.

Is it a good time to buy used car? Or is it better to wait until used cars become cheaper ?

Budget is around 15K, need reliable saloon/hatchback around 2006-07, preferably Jap/German automatic.
    Any ideas?

Great time as long as you're not going to trade in your own

    It certainly is.

    You looking for a Petrol/Diesel?

It is a great time to be buying a used car, especially if you have no trade-in. A 9 year old Primera is worth nothing to a dealer at this stage so I would not even try and trade it. Sell it privately instead, there is still a market for good, cheap cars of this age.

With no trade-in you should be able to drive a straight deal discount off the forecourt price of a used car from a garage. Just remember to get the best price you will need to shop around and go into garages in person, you will not get the best price over the phone or by e-mail.

Regarding what to go for, need a bit more specifics such as petrol/diesel, max/min engine size, big or small car, etc.

That really depends on how urgently you need the car - with no end to our economic woes in sight, prices are only going to go one way.

    Thanks for answers.

Specifics – need reliable family sized saloon/hatchback around 2006-07, preferably automatic Jap/German. Driving mainly in Dublin, with occasional trips (Wicklow etc).
    Budget is around 15K.
    Engine from 1.6 to 2.6.
    Mileage up to 50 K

Seen Nissan Primera 2006 automatic for 8900 euro, mileage 50 K – is this good price?
    Any disadvantages of automatic?

Diesel vs petrol - does not matter. excuse my ignorance, but may be you could outline briefly advantages/downsides ?

I'm not knocking your choice at all, but why go for that size engine for driving mainly in Dublin? Loads of people do, so there's obviously nothing wrong with it, I've just never seen why people want a larger engine in a city environment.

Consider the Honda Accord? Ya could get a comfy beemer or merc as well just not 2006!

And for gods sake, don't get a diesel! It ****ing stinks. ;)

OP the world is your oyster with your criteria, don't even think about the Primera and don't rule anything out with more than 50k on the clock. The most important thing is the condition of the car not what the odometer says.

    Here are a few choices:

In the states, you can get some pretty darn good deals on new/newer cars right now too.

My experience as a recent cash buyer of a used car was this:

    Advertised price: 17000
    Bought at: 15500
Extras thrown in: 1yrs warranty, New tyres, New timing belt
