    Hey All,
Would appreciate your thoughts/comments on this scenario if yea can! My friend has a laptop they got in the states, they never activated vista on it, it was purchased over a year ago and just left aside!

Anyway it appears that the dvd drive is busted on it.. my question is this. I'd like to install XP for them on it and do it through an external optical drive connected via usb. Now is it just a question of when booting up to choose the optical drive with the xp disc in it to boot from first or is there a danger that the laptop won't recognise the usb drive?

if it doesn't boot automatically from the external drive try going into the BIOS settings and setting the boot sequence so that it boots from the usb first
