M4 recommendations? What make and Why?

I don't think this has been covered here before, apologies if it has, though given that there are new models coming out all the time it should be fairly relevant.

Basically I’m looking to buy a new M4 and there are so many makes and variants to choose from it is difficult to choose one over another. I’ve a DBoys M4 CQB style one at the moment and I’m comfortable with it, so its going to be a direct replacement for this rather than another style of AEG such as an AK or MP5 or whatever. In addition given that I can re-use the mags & battery etc there is a bit more for the main spend.

Key requirements: it has to be dependable, reliable and with a decent R.O.F. The budget I have in mind is in the 250 – 300 range although this could be increased a small bit if there was something exceptional worth pushing the boat out for.

So far I’ve looked at or more accurately read up on the popular ones, G&G, KWA, Tokyo etc. and some others, Western Arms, King Arms, Magpul but have not had any first hand experience of them. In short if you have one of these would you recommend it and why?

I have a D-Boys M4 A1 and it's pretty sweet. Had it for about a year with no problems. It looks, fires and feels nice.

As an owner of both a dboys (M4s) and a couple of G&G's (plastica and cqbH) I would definately go for the G&G everytime.
The dboys is good but can a little hit and miss (no pun intended) performance wise. Another point to consider is that there is a blowback version of the plastica on the way, although it hasn't made it to Irish retailers just yet.

The new blowback systems look really good alright, there is a great video of it in action on a King Arms Galil on a well known video site.

I wonder would the drawbacks, thinking extra costs, increased battery drain & increased wear and tear, outweigh the 'novelty' factor.

I'm no expert but it seems to be a new system in certain more expensive AEG's where some of the air used to propel the BB is diverted to drive a spring-loaded bolt back and forwards on the outside. Its basically just a visual effect. Check out a few of the video clips of it in action, will probably explain it a lot better than I have ;)

Yeah I can understand the novelty factor but having briefly used a top tech (a higher end G&G) m4, I have to say it is pretty cool! I am far from being an expert on the engineering aspects but I gather the blowback systems being used now are much more refined than the earlier attempts.

    Enjoy the retail therapy!

Well I reckon this M4 will have to do me for a while so might as well look into it and try to enjoy the retail therapy while it lasts ;)
What do you like about the G&G ones you mentioned do you mind me asking. Have you needed to change any of the internals?

I was looking at a few Classic Army ones earlier but as I haven't really heard too much about them I don't know how they compare.

Anyone own a KWA M4? Where do these lie in terms of quality?
The one I have my eyes on is a "Defender" model in <snip>

KWA AEGs, like their pistols, are top of the line. The M4 was their second gun and is meant to be ready for an 11.1v lipo although I don't know how long this would last in it.

As regards to the internals on the G&G, the only thing I changed on the plastica was the hopup rubber, which might not have needed to be done but I did it out of habit. I know it was chronoed at 318 out of the box, so left the rest alone. (I tend to be left with spare parts when I get too curious!)
If your budget is about the 250 mark, you could get the metal m4 but the components are the same, a metal receiver only seems to be the difference. The CQB/H is a little monster of a thing, again out the box was doing 280 with a .25, which is about .91J. It is more expensive mind you.

Finally, as regards to CA, a lot of people on Boards seem to have gotten their mits burnt with them but I know 3 people with them, including a few of the much maligned sportslines, and they seem spot on. One was exactly at 328 fps straight out of the box!

Hope my meanderings were of some use you!

Anything less than G&G and your selling yourself short:)

So excellent recommendations for the G&G range, and also the KWA & CA. Must say the G&G M4 ones look class. What about Tokyo Marui's M4A1? The reviews I've read about them are fairly positive with a few small issues mentioned, though many of these refer to older versions and there is a new one out that is supposed to have eliminated many of these issues. Can anyone share an opinion on the new TM M4A1?
