I'm just curious to know what insurance companies consider as more "risky" occupations when it comes to the cost of your motor insurance policy.

I've heard chef's are in a higher risk category, maybe due to working long hours and stress?!

Any insurance company employees know what the higher risk jobs are?
    :)

    Sales Rep apparently.

I was renewing my policy with one direct(Hibernian Policy) and they refused to insure me because I had taken up a job as a sales rep although my most previous job was a sales merchandiser which involved the same amount of driving.

They are concerned you will drive around all day and then come home and get in your own car, very very tired from driving and crash.

Actors, Musicians and mobile DJ's are all considered "High Risk".

Ironically, Musician, DJ & Actor Iggy Pop recently did a TV advertisement extolling the virtues of Swiftcover insurance in the UK (a company which does not offer policies to Musicians, DJ's or actors because of the risk factors involved.)

    The ad was pulled.

Anything Media Related, radio,Tv,print and you'll get loaded. I don't know if new media (internet) workers get loaded, buty shure they probably do.

Funny, I was once doing online insurance quotes and entered in "priest" as my occupation to see if it made any difference. When I rang up the company to follow up on my legitimate quote, the sales guy could see my online quotes and said "so i see you're a.... priest?" and starting laughing. :D

I just said I wanted to see if it reduced my price and he asked "so did it?". "Unfortunately no...". :D

True with some companies they add extra for been a chef as we work long hours and have access to alcohol. I queryed them about this and they gave me a blah blah story about the oldn days when chefs were piss heads.

i anonymously asked for a quote and told quinn i worked for a newspaper , quote came back as 1800 euro , called again as my real details and said computer operator and was quoted 1600 , so it does make a difference , id imagain the loading would apply to :

    sales rep's
    anyone working around alcohol
    anyone working unsociable hours

Never tried to select different occupations to get quote down.

I usually find it difficult to select something that is close to me job. They badly need to update those lists as almost no IT occupation options yet can find Thatcher (the roof guy not the politician) & other 18th century jobs!

    Student is high risk also.

Hence I'm Sales & Marketing (Office based) 15% cheaper now.

Careful of non disclosure people re; occupation.

Working in the automotive industry also drives up your premium....so I always put down "mech engineer" working in "manufacturing industry". Its true and its cheaper!

Web Designer never used to be on the list (I used to go with Graphic Designer), but I see Quinn have added it now.

Some of the occupations are mad, and you'd wonder how they could be relevent to your cover at all:
    • Bacon Curer
    • Dendochronologist (someone who studies tree rings to determine seasonal weather variability and long-term climate variations)
    • Trout Farmer
    • Orchestral Violinist (but no mention of any other Orchestral musicians)

I'm actually getting insurance for less on a Axa student first policy because I'm a student well Im postgraduate but I dont think its makes much difference over being undergraduate.

Lads I know who are working cannot avail of the discount. I always thought the student policy's were for people starting out but I have 4 years no claims and they still put me on a student policy.

Yep iv heard about the motor industry gettn higher premiums,no idea why though? and true of chefs, bar staff or anyone who works around alcohol.

Your occupation really shouldnt matter i guess, probably just another excuse to screw you out of some more money. Iv found when getting quotes online they look for occupation but not always on the phone?

Why would people in the media get higher rates??

ninja edit: when i was a student a few companies told me they dont insure students! what a load of bull!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,704 ✭✭✭Mr.David

I dont think its bull, it makes sense: In the same way that men are statistically riskier than women and this is reflected in the premium, why should professions not be weighted also to reflect the statistics?

I said refusing to insure students is bull. not the whole occupation factor. You could be a mature full time student, or a part time student, "student" covers so many different people and ages i just think its a bit mad!

It's still shown on Sky 2 (and maybe Sky 1), they sponsor sci-fi programs. Drives me nuts cos he's a fncking weirdo. Odd looking guy.

I doubt they actually think of reasons why these people should be loaded, instead they pull their risk from statistical analysis, which shows that people in these occupations are statistically more likely to end up in a crash. My OH's an actress and a teacher (in equal measures, by and large). The former drove up her premuim by 33%, so on her policy she's a teacher.
Why would people in the media get higher rates??
I imagine it's for the same reason as other people in the entertainment business - there are often long hours with little sleep, as well as after-work drinks and whatever else.

Since men tend to spend less on health care can I have cheaper health insurance then?

Silly me - that would be sexist, wouldn't it?
