Hard Drive Conundrum

    Hey is it possible to hook up your a hard drive from a desktop to your laptop using a usb to sata cable and to boot up with my external hard drive as the primary drive?

    Yes and no. Depending on the laptop its possible to boot up through usb, but its very unlikely windows will load due to the desktop drivers being installed. If its a fresh install it should work, but would be very slow due to the drawbacks of USB latency and data transfer rates.

    You might have to fiddle with some BIOS settings to enable it to boot via USB.
    , but its very unlikely windows will load due to the desktop drivers being installed.

    If you got that far, then you could boot in Windows Safe mode, that should work.

    Oh this sounds like it might be more difficult than i'm able for ill google around for some guides or something

    If you got that far, then you could boot in Windows Safe mode, that should work.

    even in safe mode Windows reverts to using certain after image drivers. Believe me I've tried it a few times. You have to completley strip the install of all third party drivers to avoid blue screens.

    Ok thanks Cuddlesworth, im trying to get over a blue screen problem so im not gonna go down this route, way to hard for my computer skillset.
