dell laptop about 5 years old - what to do

Just looking at my gf's unused laptop.. very slow and old.. what would you reccomend that i do with it.. is there any point reinstalling a new OS.. and myabe getting some extra memory and hd space.. i've never upgraded a laptops hardware as ive heard its quite hard... and would it be cheaper to get external hd than internal.

If you have an XP disk I'd install that or some variation of linux.

To upgrade the memory and hard drive is not as hard as you think.

What size memory and hd is there at the minute?

very easy to replace / upgrade. Pop of a panel on the bottom or on the side and slot it in. A fresh install of the OS that it came with would work wonders aswell.

If you're not stuck for hard drive space buy some new memory, and do a clean install of windows.

i have an old system too - latitude c540. I was thinking of putting edubuntu or qimo on it and making it a kids machine instead of re-installing windows.
