Macbook fan(s)?

Hi all, White Macbook 2.0GHz bought last July started wheezing the other night when it was on for a while. Sounded like a knackered fan, so I downloaded SMC Fan control and on one fan it has the correct RPM, while on the other it say -1RPM. Any hardware people on here confirm that it sounds like there is a problem with the fan? I don't want to wave goodbye to it for a fortnight if I don't have to. Thanks in advance

Dead fan alright by the sound of it. Common problem. I've seen it more with the macbook pro and powerbook g4 though. That said I would get it sorted under warranty. The white macbooks run pretty hot so I wouldn't want the fan being dicky.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Thanks for that. It does seem to refer to 2006 Macbooks though and the problem seems to have gone away after. Apple released an update for fan control, which has now disappeared. I'll keep an ear to it, and bring it for repair if it happens again. it is only one fan in the Macbook anyway.

Watch out. On my old MacBook Pro (Core Duo, 2Ghz) the graphics card got cooked. I have a thread here somewhere in which I was brain-storming aloud for solutions, but eventually it became painfully obvious that I should have installed smcFanControl a lot sooner, and kept the internal heat levels down (not least by keeping unneeded browser windows with Flash closed, etc). But by then it was too late, the machine was well past warranty, and was becoming a matter of when it was going to die completely.

The eventual solution cost a couple of thousand euro, but I'm very happy with it. And the old MBP makes a great VOIP/Internet terminal for my wife.

Far as I know, a Mac Book only has one fan. After all, only one side gets hot, the left side. The right side is just the CD or DVD drive. Even if you just touch under the laptop, the left will be warm the right not so. The -1 reading I think is the program expecting a fan reading and not getting one so its just giving the reading of -1 to say there is no fan because a reading of zero would mean its not spinning...i think?
