I have a 05 reg car. Is there anywhere to check when an NCT is due on it?
I went to www.nct.ie but the site is down!

It's due the date your car was registerd!

Due on anniversary of date of first reg. You can find this on the vehicle licensing cert. Do not confuse with the date of licensing (taxing). There is a key for the different codes on the lower part of the VLC.

Note that 05 car can be NCT'ed up to six months before the due date. Expiry date will still be anniversary of first reg, so you could have a car with a 30 month NCT.

I wouldn't even bother getting one. I was stopping by a cop the other day for taking a forbidden left-turn and he didn't even mention anything about the NCT disc being missing even though he clearly looked over my discs. I'm gonna keep on not bothering either. NCT is a scam.

Date of 4th anniversary of registration date which you will find on your VLC (ownership doc).

You can also get it done up to about 6 months early than this date, if it suited you - still giving you the renewal date of another 2 years + 6 months (so keeping with your registration date).

Ok if you don't know your NCT due date, then clearly you're missing your NCT disc that should be displayed on your windscreen. If you're missing that, then you should get an NCT immediately, as the only point in getting one is so that you can display the disc.

Its a 2005 car. This will be the first NCT.

Be sure to let us know how that works out for you. I'd sooner pay €50 than risk 5 points on my license, but that's just me.

The NCT costs €50 and an hour of your time. Your typical Irish person would have no issues spending the same effort in a pub.

Actually, 50 Euro is the best case scenario. In my case, first pay for a service to make sure it'll pass. Take it for NCT, it passed on everything but failed on emissions. Then take car several times over to one of the garages on the long mile road that specialises in emissions testing (costing real time and money). Eventually they said there's nothing they can do, it won't pass emissions - they had even replaced the catyltic convertor and everything. So screw it, given up trying to pass.

    Here's what the AA advises:

"This is not the same as the penalty points that are issued automatically for speeding. If you drive past a speed camera today you will receive a penalty points notice in the post. You will NOT be issued with penalty points on the spot or in the post because you do not have your NCT. This can ONLY happened when you are charged, taken to court and successfully convicted. At the moment, you can be fined up to €1,500 and from 1st May you can also be given up to 5 penalty points."

So unless you take an attitude with a Garda or don't pay a fine as soon as you get it, you should not find yourself in court and should not therefore get any penalty points. As I said, the word on the street is that Gardai don't care about the NCT and I found the same when I was stopped last week.

They (the Gardai) may not care at the moment, thats just the way things panned out over the years. The Irish laid back mentality. But that can change very quickly if they are given stronger instructions to enforce things. 5 points is mad but at the same time may be confiscating a car might be a better option. Every day in a pound costs so much, that might have the desired effect. While some cars may fail for something fairly trivial, that can be put right without major expense. All other failures in cars should be put right or not be on the roads. Otherwise we will see a return to days gone by with cars everywhere, much like the ones certain farmers use to drive.

Times may be tough, so if your car cannot pass get rid of it or scrap it. Lots of cars pass the test that are only worth a grand or two.
