I can get a great deal on buying an Outlander straight but still stuck with my own 03 BMW318. Or I can trade in and get a fairly good deak on a 07 x3. Anyone any pearls of wisdom to offer on the merits of either vehicle? Veerng towards the X3 because I simply cant get a buyer for the 318.

the only thing I will say is , that everytime you sit in the X3 you will be disapointed, knowing that it is just the poor mans X5...
ohh and I personally think its crap to drive....

Are they you're only options? I've driven the X3 diesel with the M-sport pack and it was awful. bone crunching ride and not that refined. Works well on good roads but not suitable for Ireland at all. I'm sure the standard non-M version would be considerably better.

Dont really know much about the outlander. Why not consider a Freelander? They are nice to drive, comfy and grown up.

If you do decide on the X3, be prepared to live with it for a very, very long time. You can't give them away at the moment.

Not sure about the Outlander, but Mitsubishi are doing some very good deals on them at the moment.

Dont buy the X3, as the lads above say, its not a great car, and you will be stuck with it for a long time.

If your interested in the Outlander, have a look at the Citroen C Crosser, and the Peugeot 4007. They're the same car, but you may get a better price for either of the above

A few points to add to my original post. My father has an Outlander. They are nothing spectacular but are decent enough. Exceptionally comfortable and with traction control generally a smooth ride. If I could get anyway decent money for my own Id go for the Outlander. Drummerboy, you say I will be stuck with the X3 for a very long time if I buy it. Is this not true of almost all cars, jeeps etc at the moment? The garage where Im trying to buy it have come down almost €5000 in price since I showed a little interest. X5s are lovely but I dont for various reasons, financial and other want to go larger than a 2litre engine.

Yes, you are right in a way, but i'll explain it like this.

The X3 generally isnt considered a good car, so if there is someone looking for a vehicle along the lines of an X3, he'll look at a Freelander, or X Trail, or any of the other better similar sized jeeps.

The problem with it is if you buy it, you will struggle even more to move it on in a few years.

Might be worth considering a Subaru Forester as well if you really want a new vehicle. The new boxer diesel has adressed the problem of high fuel consumption on previous (petrol) models. Plus more engineered than the Mitsubishi.

+ its made in south africa, and not Bavaria, they dont look good at all. Forester would be a better option.

Hogans in Limerick have a 08 Manual for €38.5 while Keogh's have an auto @ €39.5k.

The Auto retails new at €63k, so realistically you're getting a good wedge off that for a car with 11k on the clock. I don't really think there's a market for these things in manual down the line either.
