I am looking at putting around 14 sq metres of stone on the front porch of my house. I have come across a product called light weight building stone which is half the depth of standard stone i.e 2 inches. It is put on with an adhesive instead of cement. It is similar to cladding as far as I know but is natural stone. Has anyone used this before or come across it?? Is it any good??

I'm thinking about the same type of stuff for doing 2 fireplaces. Can you tell me where you're buying and what sort of costs?

Ill try and post a picture of it later, but for the money it is fantastic value. We paid €39.99 for it i wanted 12sqm of it so i drove there for it, it is one heavy load they deliver for free i should have just went with that! We put it up ourselves very easy to do and can be cut with a consaw, if your wall is scratch coated put on the artex with a tile trowl and away you go. Any other prices i got for it were around €90 a sqm! They have an ad in todays independant with a sale on so might be cheaper again now!

    Hi Jollyman

I came acroos your blog about the selfbuild which was very good.In relation to your windows I received a quote from munster Joinery for double glazed pvc (timber look) for 11,500 euros.I went down to Glanmire yesterday evening to speak with the Sjodalshaus
representative regarding their triple glazed windows in timber (painted black)

She told us that their outlays are small as she works from home and they supply the windows and there is a fitter in Carrigtwohill that will fit them.I see from your excel spreadsheet that Sjodalshaus cam in cheaper than Munster joinery.I cannot believe the quote between Munster Joinery and Sjodalshaus in terms of price. It would be interesting to see what the quote is which I will receive back on Monday which is very quick.

I would appreciate any tips or advice regarding the selfbuild and I will update you on window prices if you wish?

    Regards

In a follow up, I bought stone from <snip> for 2 fireplaces. Its a lovely product but they are deplorable to deal with. Their price has gone up to €50 per square meter. Also I needed 36 foot of corners and they sent me 48 pieces - only enough to cover 12 foot of corner. Also, for the other fireplace I needed 40 foot of corners and they only sent me 16 pieces- enough to cover 4 foot of corners. They delivered and it took 3 weeks - not the 5 days that they promised. I am in the process of returning all of the straights that they sent to me instead of the corners so I hope that they will exchange it for me - even if I have to pay the extra €5 per meter for the corners. I am planning to drive down to collect it as I have someone waiting to put the rest of it up at the weekend. They are notoriously hard to get on the phone, won't return my call, even though they don't know that I have a complaint to make. The guys that sell the stone are always on another call or out loading. It has ended up costing way more than I had budgeted for. Moral of the story is get it elsewhere if you can. Their salesmen haven't a clue what they're talking about. Think the guy that dealt with me was drunk on that sunday afternoon that I visited.

    Moderators?!!!

Seems like a vicious attack on this company. I've dealt with them in the past and found them pretty decent. Their products are absolutely top class, great value and I've found them good to deal with.

I dealt with them recently for building stone and had no problems what so ever, great price, decent stone and delivered on time. Found them good to deal with also.

Looks like you have had a bad experience. I hope it worked out for you in the end. I bought from them two years ago and everything was fine. BTW, If you haven't been able to get through to them how do you know "they don't know what they are talking about"?

Surely when some people are allowed to post up their good experiences with them, others are allowed to post up their bad experiences.

Mods, if it is a vicious attack on them, I apologise and give my full concent to having my post removed. But what's the point in having a thread detailing all that's good about the company and encouraging people to buy from them if some people have had issues with them? I wouldn't have bought from them if it were not for this thread. I regret buying from them now.

My post above plainly details how they don't know what they are talking about. to point it out again, I drove 77 miles to their showroom and discussed my needs with their salesman. I told him how much I wanted which included 76 foot of corners. He did up a sales invoice for me in which he detailed that I had everything I needed. When I put up the stone, I found that instead of having 76 foot of corners, I only have 16 foot of corners. If that can't be described as "not knowing what you're talking about", then what is?

    Hi

I have to say that I had a very similar experience which was only resolved today. The problems were:

    (a) Drove to their office in June and got detailed quote. When I ordered in late July, price had gone up 10euro psqm
    (b) Ordered anyway and was told that delivery would be two weeks by special courier as they dont normally go my way. 100 euro extra. Courier duly arrives 2 weeks later and cannot unload stone as does not have a moffat truck, only a small machine that only works on perfectlylevel tarmac (couriers words). Stone had to be unloaded at my neighbours house and hauled up in small loads in my van. 50% of delievry charge is currently being refunded.
    (c) Stone mason checks stone and fines half the short corners as missing. After discussion with a rep , they find they have sent the wrong product. Two weeks later Im still chasing missing corners.
    (d) Adhesive supplied is not the one stated on the invoice, the stonemason tries it and its not ready after 24hrs. The stonemason also makes a comment that since they say that lightweight building stone can be laid at twice the rate of normal stone, this is not much good without a fast drying adhesive.

In fairness, they sent one of their guys over 100 miles (each way) today to resolve my problems and I now have what I need to continue the build but this has caused me scheduling issues.

I would use them again but would get everything in writing.

    Cheers

To be honest I never noticed the company being mentioned. Its an old thread for a start, they were left out of the OP (for a reason). And there first mention was from a know and regular poster (yes it matters,). Above all, the company name is quite easy to miss, esp when typed in lower case in the middle of a sentence.

General, neither good nor bad stories of this type are allowed. If the general trend is lots of positive posts from regular users then I'm happy to leave it most of the time.

Negative are more of an issue. As boards are now liable for any opinion you express. Now, it would make me a bit of a hypocrite to infract/warn/ban you based on that post as you were only doing the same as others (although in opposite direction). So I've simple removed all references to the company.

Obviously you had a bad expierence. But this happens from time to time. and from the sounds of it, its not all their fault.
I would use them again but would get everything in writing.

Again, its partly your fault for the way you approached the issue to begin with.

Anyway, back on topic, no more mentioning of names here.

    Hi Mellor

If your remark is directed at me, could you clarify why this is partly my fault ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,232 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

It was directed at you and a previous poster, for similar reasons
Well obviously, the issues with the wrong products being send is their fault. (which is why I partly)

    (a) Drove to their office in June and got detailed quote. When I ordered in late July, price had gone up 10euro psqm

I would use them again but would get everything in writing.

I only quoted the part about getting it in writing as this is the part I is your fault in my opinion. When it comes to buying anything from a company directly, you need to get everything in writing.

You went over in june and got a quote. And when you returned in late july (lets say 6 weeks later). It had increased. Firstly, prices do increase. Alot of companies operate a July-june tax year so thats a point where an increase is likely.
Simply put if you got a quote in june, it was a huge mistake on your behalf by not getting this is writing (along with an expiry date). This is a must. And applies to all aspects. I wasn't trying to offend you, but rather point out the mistake so you or anyone else, won't do it again.

I got a quote last year for a custom sink and counter top (one unit). It was designed by me as a one off. After I got the quote, I got it in writing, along with a date. By the time the unit was ready to order, the date expired. A little bit of standing my ground ensured I got the priced I wanted. Paying cash on collection got a further 10% off.
