I'm an unemployed carpenter and want to get rid of my van for something more economical as my girlfriend is in Dublin and i do a lot of traveling. Anyway I have a 05 transit t260 which is a swb low roof one, it has 100,000 miles on it, so i rang up a garage to trade it in against a car which was worth 9,000. The sales man told me that 3,500 is all anybody would give me for it. Now looking at carzone it doesn't seem right, but is this all the garage will give on a trade in? Thanks if anybody knows anything about this

Is yours a transit connect, or transit? Bear in mind the arse has fallen out of the commerical market - you can buy a caddy van new now for 9k + vat.

As bad as the car market is, the van market is even worse. With businesses closing, downsizing or simply saving their money, there is a glut of vans and other assorted commercial vehicles.

Keep your van, invest some money in a good service and keep off the gas a bit and the economy should get a bit better.

You will burn a lot more money by selling/trading the van than you will by driving it.

Its the bigger one, not the transit connect.. I know that commercials arnt worth much these days but scrappage deals get 3000euro in a lot of garages..

Concentrate on the cost to change price, pointless a garage giving you a high trade-in value if the car you are trading it against is overpriced too. Go to another garage and get a cost to change price on a similar car to compare. Note though that you are going to loose alot by trying to trade a commercial against a car.

Also pay little or no attention to carzone prices, they are asking prices often posted by dreamers. Those vans are still for sale for that reason.

That has nothing to do with the value of the trade-in, that's a discount offered by the garage/importer.

Look at similar vans on buyandsell.ie, donedeal.ie. gumtree.ie and so on. Its true that vans are worth feck all.

Fella I used to work for parked his 05 master up to wait for better times.

SWB and low roof are not that popular second hand either, LWB and standing room are whats wanted.

It has nothing to do with your van in isolation, it is down to supply and demand. There are no buyers for comercial vehicles at present,so a dealer won't be able to shift it off his forecourt. What he is saying to you is 'try and sell it privately and I'll give you a good discount off a cash purchase for your next vehicle'

OP, try and hang onto it if possible. You'll lose a lot more on a trade in than you will spend on fuel. Maybe reduce your speed by 10%.

I was listening to a chap on the radio the other day, got let go from his job as an engineer, got a van and started his own window cleaning company. He's now making more money than he was in his old job.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Park up yer van. Buy a cheap aul corrolla for under a grand. It'll be cheap to run. You can sell it for almost as much as you bought it from when your finished with it.

The arse has definately fallen out of the van market. A mate of mine picked up a 04 Renault Master with 70k on the clock for 2,900 all it needed was a windscreen and it paseed its D.O.E. He bought it from a guy who deals in repossessed vehicles. I know its some poor sods old van who couldn't make his repayments because of the recession but a bargain is still a bargain. Also i saw on the news that LDV is shutting down. Source BBC.

If you empty all your stuff out of the van and don't push too hard you should be able to get decent range from a tank. No point in spending money you don't have on something which could work out worst then the van you know.

I'm at the opposite scale, looking for a van at the moment and the prices compared to when I bought my current van in 2007 are much cheaper which is great for me as I have a chance to get a decent van for my very tight budget. I need a specific van (14ft floorspace, white luton transit new shape) so can't work out a deal with you on this.

In my searching for a luton, I've come across millions of panel vans, the amount of repossessed ones in auction rooms, classifieds is scary.

Bear in mind that if you do "park" your van up, get a car and get a call for a job, your car insurance wont transfer to a commercial vehicle so you may need two policies.

What kind of mileage do you get from a swb/low roof? My LWB High Roof gives about 400 miles on a full tank.:o

Yeah I suppose your right, its not too bad on juice, 30mile to the gallon or there abouts.. although I would rather be cruising in a car it'l just have to do for now.. thanks for the advise everybody, If anybody wants the van they can have it for 5000..other than that I'l be driving the van until it stops, which knowing transits will be a long long time.
