Ok I went to look at a used car today, when the bonnet was open I noticed the engine was pretty dusty - salesman said it would be cleaned up & lacquered before selling...

why would it be dusty and does it matter?

Do you mean just dirt in general or actual layers of dust? It is normal for the engine bay to get dirty as lots of dirt and muck from the roads gets splashed up around the engine bay.

not huge amounts of dust... kinda just a layer of dust over all the enginey bits (thats the technical term!!) just wondered why!

Not everyone (incl me) cleans their engine. Underneath the engine is open space, road dust and dirt gets up into the engine space.

1.6 FSi has a timing chain afaik so it should not need changing. To be sure though give a VW dealer a ring.

I get very suspiscious when a second hand car has a gleaming engine ... usually its been washed for reasons other that being just simply dirty

A bit of rust is better then a bit of oil imo

The water pump may be driven the fan belt, though i'm not awfully familier with that engine

Have the 1.6 FSI engine in my wife's A2. Audi say 60k miles or 5 years whichever comes first. Check to be sure. Never take a chance with a timing belt.
