Its never too late to learn guitar! The only place I can direct you to is the Galway Advertiser. There are usually classified ads for guitar tutors.Try the old google search and try youtube for lessons.

A couple of years ago I went for a series of classes to Galway Guitar School. The way he operates is that he pulls a few people together who have similar musical interests and holds one class with 4/5 particpants. That was the theory. When I took the class, he had only one other student - I liked country and blues, the other guy wanted Irish Folk - Christy Moore. We ended up learning REM and other pop/rock stuff. Go figure. I thought Noel B was uninterested and a poor teacher. He had his notes prepared and he was going to use those no matter what our interests. The other guy dropped out after a few classes. I hung on in there but learnt nothing. Waste of money.

Yeah, i went to him myself. I had the same experience. There was a group of about 4 at the time. Myself and 3 kids about 10 years old. We didn't learn anything we were interested in. He didn't even ask, what are interests were. Just went for the same thing this user said. REM, knocking on heavens door and the likes. As this user said, he did have notes prepared so i guess he uses thoses regardless. He also had a cd with the songs you were to learn. But they were all the original songs which anyone can get. It wasn't a cd of the songs played on guitar. You got the cd on the first lesson. So they were the songs he was sticking to.
The same thing happened, two of the kids dropped out and i stayed but learnt nothing.

I want to take it up again and i want to get one-on-one lessons and learn something i want to learn, even if it is for a bit of sing a long.

Are there anyone around galway that offers one-on-one lessons and teaches you to play what you want to learn?

reading the post it looks like that galwayguitarschool hasnt provided the same experience for others as it has for me. For me it gave the me opportunity to understand more of the guitar and how it works, sounds and how to apply it to songs i hear.
I think in fairness to galwayguitarschool this post isnt about whether he is good or bad, the OP asked for places to learn guitar? If one didnt work for you suggest another. This world doesnt always have to be about finding problems with existing services, just keep it positive and offer an alternative.

Just out of curiousity do either of those that attended Galwayguitar school continue to learn or did they take lessons elsewhere?

Ive no tie with any guitar lessons or vested interest in Galway guitar school

A house party is not worth going to unless there is a big sing song at some point. Spancil hill ftw.

If he's still doing it then I'd recommend Declan Collins. Went to him for two years a while back now, maybe 2001, 2002. He's gifted but will teach you anything you are into.

He plays with Millhouse (they play alot around town) so maybe go to one of their gigs and ask if he's still teaching.

That would be Kevin guitar-made-easy. Check out guitar-made-easy.com. I went to him, he is good but is too happy or something. He makes you sing too so if you don't want to vocalise then avoid!

Yea, I used him. Very good, classes were fun, no pressure. Learned without trying too. Enjoyed Monday night classes.

I didn't sing, he will try and make you, but won't make you uncomforable.

    Good value for money.

I never got lessons from anyone, but one piece of advice I can give you that should stand you in good stead is... PRACTICE.

I'm a lazy fecker at the best of times, but despite myself, I picked it up quickly enough, because I just practised a lot.

    Best of luck with it.

Declan Collins is something else. What a gifted player and teacher. Went to him for a year and a half. Had to give up because of the Leaving Cert a year ago but I've been meaning to go back to him since. He's based in the Cooke's Corner area, near Shantalla. It's no wonder if you go into either Modern Music or Back 2 Music in town, the only teacher they'll give a reference to is Declan. He's one of these people that only has to listen to a song once and he'll be tabbing it out with a pen and paper without even having to pick a few notes first.

    Absolute legend :)

Are there anyone around galway that offers one-on-one lessons and teaches you to play what you want to learn?

Ok! have to respond to that to defend my business but also cuz i just love a good row ha ha.............. : ) if you were learning knockin on heavens door, REM etc that means you were doing my beginners course and beginners are understandably limited in terms of what they're able to get a handle on with the guitar particularly in the rhythm dept. The songs i choose for the beginners course are designed to get people playing straight away and are picked mainly because they have very regular rhythms which means i can give a strumming formula which is easy to follow and master - this is not the case in the vast majority of songs which would have irregular strumming/rhythm patterns and which for the beginner would prove very difficult if not impossible to master and in my opinion based on 20 years teaching experience the beginner has enough difficulty getting a handle on chords without crippling them with rhythm sequences they can't understand or execute - these songs for the beginners course are also chosen because they are middle of the road with a mainstream appeal - i appreciate that not everyone will love knockin on heavens door, boulevard of broken dreams and wonderwall but twinkle twinkle they are not and the reality is the vast majority would regard them as decent first songs to learn on guitar - if people wanted to do jazz fusion or some senegalese hip hop as an absolute beginners maybe they should say so at the start but more on that later. The claim that someone could do one of my beginner courses and come out the other end having "learnt nothing" is a mystery to me because every beginners guitar course that i do includes a module on how to tune your guitar - instruction and plenty of practice on reading chord diagrams and reading guitar tablature which are the only 2 languages most will ever need in their guitar adventures and allows someone to access and understand books and internet material so that they can easily go on to improve themselves - the beginners course involves learning strumming songs like, dare i say it knockin on heavens door (sorry bob), boulevard of broken dreams, wonderwall etc as well as pickin songs such as ride on, wonderful tonight, walk the line etc - both the strumming and the pickin songs involve a range of styles and techniques that can be used with most of the songs you'll encounter in the future and are specifically chosen with that in mind so it's not just about the songs covered in the course it's about learning "how to play" through learning these songs so that you can go on to learn more complex songs that maybe your more motivated to learn in the future but you have to start somewhere and you have to gain the experience, techniques and expertise a step at a time - furthermore, on top of these songs and principles in the beginners course you would also get to learn how to read and play some cool riffs, anything from nirvana to the simpsons, you get all your teaching materials and the dreaded cd so that you don't forget stuff after as well as some unforgettable humour from yours truely - if you did the course and came away having "learnt nothing" all i can say is you must have been sniffing glue down the back but more likely you didn't practice and so you didn't master - a guitar teacher can only do so much, you have to want to do it yourself - finally, i have no problem whatsoever doing stuff that people ask for particularly at the improver/advanced levels as it's much easier to motivate people like this and is alot easier and more enjoyable for me but at the beginner level people rarely if ever ask but if it's do-able i'm all for doing it - I do have a money back guarantee and after many years and several thousand students i've never been asked for a refund - well, actually there was that one time with my mother but that doesn't count - Cheers :)

About 10 years ago I made a few attempts at learning the guitar but I always let the practiceing slip until I gave up on each attempt. I tried magazines, TV programmes and even attended an instructor in Lower Salthill called Mike Varden but he was leaving it too much up to myself as to what I should be doing while I would have preferred a more directed approach at the time.
I'm thinking of having another go at it as I never sold my guitar. Just wondering does anyone know any good internet sites or youtube videos where I could learn without having to pay for lessons.
