' msconfig ' isn't working in the command prompt.

Any ideas, as I want to change some of my start up programs. Or could someone tell me another way to get to it please.

    Thanks.

You must have admin rights to run it.

I'm an admin on the computer. Its only a recent thing, and it's annoying me now.

What OS are you using? What error message does it say exactly? You can always download it.

you don't run it from the command prompt. click on start --> run, type msconfig and hit enter

My Os is Mircrosoft Windows XP Home Edition(5.1, Build 2600). I downloaded, saved, ran and then restarted the download for 'msconfig' but it's still giving me the same error message.

"Windows cannot find 'msconfig'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file click the start button, and then click Search".

I must have done something to the file, but I've done a backup and everything.

Where did you save the msconfig file to? It either has to be in the system32 folder or the location has to be added to your system path

are you using a registry cleaner?best free one known is Ccleaner but there are many more.

they can cause this problem, they usually ask do you wish to back up changes to the registry.

I used one of these programmes and got so confident(as not saving never caused me a problem hundreds of times)i stopped backing up until one fatal day............

in my case they save to my documents and will fully restore deletion of invalid file extensions etc.

may not be of help to you but may save others who read this thread.

    good luck!

also i meant to say windows defender(available free from microsoft update via its search function)is really effective at changing your start up programmes.

    Smells of Malware to me.

Download, install, update & run Malwarebytes

msconfig is just a frontend application; most of the changes you can make through it can be made through service management (run services.msc) or through registry editing (open HKLM\ or HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, RunOnce, RunServices, etc)

Hi gadgetman, all the advice i get says never have two anti-virus programmes installed on one computer.it is very tempting though.
when i was a complete newbie at computers(even now i can only talk of my own mistakes and searching online for solutions to balls-up i have made in the past:) completly wrecked my first computer by installing a second anti-virus.when i researched it,turned out it was common knowledge amongst more experianced than me, i should never have installed the two as they were known to clash)

I often see Malwarebytes being recommended, what i dont know is it sure NOT to clash with any other anti-malware programmes installed?

    cheers

Malwarebytes isn't anti-virus it is as its name suggests a malware scanner, it only runs when you open it (has nothing sitting in memory) and here is the reccommended course of action from the lads in Redmond:

Save the file I linked you to your desktop and run it from their, not using any run command.
