will this work or is there an easier way?

run a cable(electric) up about 30M from the house (where there is a signal)

connect a dongle to a router

and run another cat5 back to the house.

    plug in laptop. ???

powering the dongle might be a problem with a 30metre power cable? are you talking about 30metres up in the air or down the road or end of the garden?

That's how I would be thinking, but how are you planning on protecting the router/power supply from the rain. Is there a shed on "the hill"?

nothing if the cable is heavy enough/good quality otherwise it could heat up blow fuses etc

whats wrong with a weatherproof box?

Keeping weather off isn't a prob

length of lead isn't a prob (I can use 2.5 sq armored if i need on its own circuit)

would this setup work is what i am asking really, or am i missing a product that would deliver the goods?

btw its not for me its for a friend who has no access to bb in the area. (except satellite )

An outdoor plastic box with hole at bottom to let out condensation lets the radio waves through fine.

You can even power it over the ethernet cable. Google Power over Ethernet. POE. You can get adaptors to use the two spare pairs in cable.

cut DC cable on router power supply and put it in house.

You might concider a 3G antenna? I was getting 3G from approx 10Km away with a 11dBi antenna when I was on 3G for broadband.

Other than that, there is not a problem in what you intend to do, a good weather proof box is all you need.

I thought about doing it at one stage so I could have my 3G router closer to the antenna to reduce signal loss. I looked into it and there is some good info out there including a blog from some guy in the US who did it, with detailed instruction and what not.Sorry I cant think where I found it now but I am sure if you google it you will find it.

Let us know how you get on and if you do end up doing it, take some pics along the way and post them, I am sure someone in the future will find it handy.
