Advice on getting a new laptop

I've got into a masters course and one requirement is having a laptop, I also intend to use this for outside of college for other projects so I want one that will be able to handle any advances for at least 2 years

This is what I need...(not much at all)

    Microsoft Office (also Microsoft Project)
    Power point
    Internet

    This is what I want...

    I would spend 800 - 1100 euro

    Good screen resolution

A few USB ports (3 minimum)

Memory - 160 GB minimum (I might play a game or two every now and again but not that often - I have about 2000- 2500 songs and I intend to add to this)

Good processor - Dual Core (2.0GHz or more)

4 gb of ram but I'd settle for 3gb cause it'll do the job

also a decent graphics card for games

    And last but not least

I don't want vista, I like XP so that'd be my preference

Can anyone give me there opinion on getting a Mac?

    - would a mac let me down in certain areas of what i'm looking for?
    - are they more entertainment based?

anything else you can think of

    Thanks in advance

p.s. i was told something about front side bus, as in having a better one increases speed or something like that, it was a passing coment that i never looked into, any idea what this is relation to?

TO get a mac at that spec will cost at least 1100,see www.laptopsdirect.ie or dell.ie, macs are bad re gaming unless you install windows on them.I think students can buy a cheaper version of office ,get a discount on it.GET at least 150meg video ram laptop.HDMI out is handy if you have a hdtv.

Talking of laptops, does anyone know where I'd get a decent, second-hand laptop cheaply. Surely, there must be plenty of disused laptops sitting around that people do not want.....

    Thanks in advance.
