What a strange match this has been, although great quality throughout. The second session has gone the complete opposite of tuesdays first session. This time John took the first three frames, Mark took the next four and John sealed the last.

    Very odd.

John will probably be the more relieved though, Mark almost made a great clearance from about 60 points behind but the colours were awkwardly placed, John ended up taking it with pink & black to level it before the last session @ 7pm tonight.

John Higgins (Sco) 8-8 Mark Selby (Eng)
    8-119 (118) 0-129 (124) 0-118 (117) 60-19 (57) 69-57 (69) 64-0 (54) 141-0 (141) 0-96 (96) 96-21 95-19 (52) 83-0 (83) 5-77 (77) 18-71 6-114 (114) 0-70 (65) 77-64

Ditto. Would love Higgins to win, although I like both players.

They really are slugging this one out. Looks like 10-10 at the moment before the interval.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,884 Mod ✭✭✭✭celticfc

Riviting stuff though, 10-10 at the mid-session it is.

I keep popping into the other table and Robertson has not long gone 12-7 up, but Maguire is winning the next, so.. 12-8.

What the hell did we do before digital telly? Every single ball potted shown live on BBC. It's bloody great! :)

    :)

Selby's taken a tactical gripping 21st frame, Selby 11(25)10 Higgins

    Robertson's through to the semi's, it's finished 13-8.

Cracking break from John after a bad roll up to a ball from Mark.

    11(25)11

    Selby 12-11 up now.

Strange incident there, Mark asked for a red ball to be cleaned after spotting a chalk mark on it but the referee refused. The Eurosport commentators didn't seem to be too impressed with the referee's refusal.

Nor were JV & WT in the BBC box but I can see the ref's point, it was very tight to get at it, the ref didn't want to be responsible for moving it any. Also the ref checked it and the chalk mark was on the oppisite side to where Mark was going to hit.

    Anywho.. THE DRAMA!! :pac:

Lots of tension out there now. Selby looks shaky. I think if Higgins can hold himself together here he'll take this.

Close snooker matches are always really exciting. Players start getting nervous and making mistakes, and then nailing really difficult shots.

the first frame of snooker I ever watched live, was John Higgins making a 147, in Goffs many, many years ago. I have a serious soft spot for him.

On a friday night in the 2000 Irish Masters, he was playing Jimmy White and it was his first frame to play in the tournament - I remember it vividly. The video of it is in the YouTube sticky thread.

That was also the last year that it was played in Goffs :(

I still miss Goffs, but it wasn't suitable for snooker - a lot of the balls used to kick.

I felt so sorry for John Parrott that day or Sat - nothing went well for him the whole match.

Higgins just potted the crucial ball. Ah well Selby. The two of them played well.

    Fantastic nerve by Higgins.

Hope he goes on to win the title now

The man - the legend, how has he done it again..?

Did you notice the nice little kiss on his wedding ring when he was leaving. His wife Denise must have been sending him more text messages (like the match vs Cope).

TBH I thought it was perfect for snooker, great arena, much better than Citywest and maybe its just me but I thought it was a better crowd aswell, more knowledgeable of the game.

    The semi's are:

    Higgins vs Allen

    &

    Murphy vs Robertson

    Both best of 33 frames.

Goffs was an amazing venue, perfect for snooker. The way it spirals around give a great atmosphere in there. Steve Davis among others has said it is by far his favourite venue. (Maybe because he won 8 Irish Masters titles there) :)

I remember one year they had some problems with kicks, but that was probably the cloth they were using more than anything else.

    Anyway, back to the crucible.

I noticed the table fitters were ready and waiting to come in to remove the second table and move the other into the middle ahead of tomorrows semi's. They were probably hoping for an early finish to it.

Delighted with Higgins winning, has to be a serious contender for the final now. Shame to see Selby have to go out though, he gave Higgins a really tough game. Higgins just won't go down easily though.

I was wondering about that, because at the end of tonight's match, the BBC had one semi listed on table 1 and the other on table 2 for tomorrow. I thought at the semi stage it was always one table, what's the story? Is the 2nd table put away on Friday?

Nope the BBC just put their graphics up wrong. The crucible is always a one-table arena for the semi's and final.

At the end of the BBCi interactive stream you could see the fitters preparing to take one of the tables asunder. It's a pity they dont leave that stream active, it would be good to see all the work involved in it.

Thought as much, wondered why they were listing 2 tables for the semis.

Must be some job moving those tables around.

Yeah, remember back in 'snooker's heyday', when the country was in a terrible state all and all, and everybody was glad of a job, the table fitters showing how they used the best bits of one table and the best bits of the other table, back in '86 I think. When they didn't open up the pockets, and replace the cloths every other day, to allow tonnes.:pac:

    Only messin' the irony wha

Narrated by David Vine. No doubt the bbc will put a good tribute together during the final this year.
