External HD question

    Hey guys, hoping for a quick answer here.
    I'm want to format my laptop, and reinstall XP, to get rid of some crap, and see if i can get it to run faster. I want to backup my necessary crap. I'm thinking an external HD is the best way. Also thinking that an external HD would be handy to use for my media centre/home network in the future. I'm not looking for Tb's of space, so 500Gb would be plenty.
    Would that one they had in Lidl be ok, or would the cheapy Buffalo one in Argos do the job?
