Ok probaly a stupid question but how can you restart the gui in Debian?
Basically I watch movies from the laptop on the tv using an s-video cable.

Now before when using XP as soon as I connected the cable the display would come up on the tv.

However this does not happen with Debian. I have to restart the laptop.
    Anyone any ideas?

So can you get it to work if you boot with the TV plugged in?
What type of video card do you have?
ctrl-alt-backspace restarts X, just make sure everything is saved first

    Hi,

Got it working. Just needed to add the tv details in the xorg.conf file.
Now it will display on the tv by using that key combo or running the xrandr command from a shell.
    Thanks again for the help.

It's great once you get it going, so handy.
I'm streaming across my LAN to the xbox360 these days, even handier again.

Did you try the display toggle on the laptop. It's usually the Function key + one of the Fx keys. It toggles display between laptop screen, external display and both. I'd guess that's why it won't display on the TV until you reboot. If you toggle to external display it should work.
