bmw 5 series speakers

My 5 series e39 front passenger side speaker is acting up, its making a crackling noise and loses sound intermittently, then comes back. It only started last night but is still faulty today. I have a few long drives coming up over the next week and need my stereo! They are cream speakers though to keep with the cream interior on the door. Can they be fixed or would I be better off getting a set from halfords etc. I know nothing about speakers, if they're on the way out would I be better off just scrapping them? Has anyone seen what black speakers look like on cream leather door cards? Also, how easy are they to change for a complete amateur?

    Thanks in advance

I'd imagine it's only the speaker covers that are cream, you can keep them and replace the speaker(s) underneath. The first thing i'd do is to check for a loose connection, failing that you could search online for a new speaker to replace the faulty one. Shouldn't be hard to replace (I assume the cover just clips/screws off), although i've no idea how to do your particular one.

the sme thing happened in my old X5, turned out that it was the radio module that was gone! its an approx 900euro fix from the dealers unless you can pick up a second hand one somewhere which i couldnt at the time, i had it replaced under warrenty either way.

do you know anybody with another 5 series or indeed a similar year BMW so you can swap radio modules and see if the speaker works perfect then?
the radio module is based in the boot down by the battery and spare wheel (well mine was).

before we realised it was the module, i had the car in with a sound shop who carried out some small tests to see if the speakers where the problem or something else.

I had the same problem on my 01 e39. I posted the problem up on bmw-driver.net and was also told it could be the headunit. I disconnected the speaker (same as yours on passenger side) to see what difference it would make and the crackling then started on the rear passenger side speaker.

http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/ have video clips which they put on youtube on how to take apart your door and access the speakers - not as difficult as you might think.

Anyway after determining that it was not the speaker but the headunit that was the problem I started looking on ebay for a replacement headunit. I had been looking for quite a while but just a few weeks ago I happened to use the tape deck for the first time - the speaker stopped crackling and has been perfect since!
