I want to use an image as a desktop link to the internet.

Anyone know how I can convert the image to an Icon file type?

    Thanks.

You could use the old quick 'n dirty trick of resizing the jpeg to 32x32, save as a bitmap, then change the file extension from .bmp to .ico

There are loads of icon creator / converter softwares out there - just google it. Most of them will give a free trial for you to test.

Be advised though, that the icon will have to meet certain resolution requirements (e.g. 16x16 or 32x32), so after converting from a JPEG don't be surprised to end up with something that looks like a mess, and barely recognisable from the original pictures (assuming it is of a much higher resolution of course).

That's incorrect. You're simply renaming the file to ico and not converting it.

OP, I've found GIMP to be the best tool for this. It has a "Save as Windows Icon file" option.

    Best option IMHO
or convert to bmp and then resize

ico is just an icon extension, the data is in bitmap format so essentially the above does exactly what was asked.

look at gimpshop too if you don't like the interface to the gimp

if using windows then http://www.getpaint.net/ is a nice package for entry level editing

If you have photoshop there is a handy little addon you can get which allows you save any image as an .ico. Link
