Basically, it keeps the car interior at a preselected temperature by using a combination of air-con or heat.
Great for keeping the windows fog-free too

Basically, it changes the climate by using more fuel when it's turned on. Over the years this will lead to global warming, El Nino and many other interesting climatic phenomena.

In the shorter term though, it lets you set the temperature you desire inside your car, be it warmer or cooler than the outside temperature.

Basically its automatic air conditioning. A climate control system will operate like any air conditioning system but have an "auto" button which when pressed works without input from you to keep the car at your preselected temperature.

Climate Control can be more efficient than just having the air con on all the time because it uses sensors placed around the interior to determine if it is needed or not

Climate Control has also been offered on cars without air con. The Nissan Almera had digital climate control but no air con back in around 2005/2006.

Yup, but it's very rare. Usually it comes with air con. I remember when they were buying one of those Almera's at home (oh the shame) they advertised it as if it actually had air con with nothing to suggest otherwise

On a similiar theme I am a bit confused with air-con. The air-con in my focus is a simple button which comes on when I use the fan. What is the benefit of this compared to just having the fan only option and turning off the air-con? There is also a button to circulate the air so I presume it must have some other effects? I have tried using both (air con on/off with the fan) and haven't noticed any major difference.

A/C refrigerates & dehumidifies the air.

In hot weather when you turn it to cold it will ensure that the air is chilled as opposed to being pumped in at the outside temperature. In wet weather it can remove moisture in the air and clear your windscreen and other windws much faster

Does climate control turn the air conditioning off on peoples cars? Mine just adjusts the temp, air flow, direction of flow. I never use it anymore as it always turns the air con on (decreases my already poor mpg), and never turns it off when the car is cool enough!

It turns the air con off when not needed to keep your setting

All a/c and c/c systems should be run regularly (probably weekly) as the refridgerant in the system is also the lubricant. Hoses and seals will perish much quicker if it's not circulated.

You will notice a big difference on a hot day. If you don't then there's something wrong, may need to be regassed.

Yes climate control will turn the aircon function on but when it gets the car to the desired temp and if refrigeration is not needed to keep that temperature, then the system stops cooling so will not be costing you. The aircon light will stay on on many models though just showing its live and ready to cool again when needed.
I leave my system on auto always. That way, I never have to bother with demisting windows etc and it does keep the system in working order. Ive had climate control cars now for about 7 years and never a problem with aircon system so its worth the few quid in petrol for that and for the comfort.

I remember reading about my Passats aircon. It said that it wont turn on the a/c if the outside temperature is cool enough to be used. So although I have it on all the time, it's probably never gets turned much at all because of our cool weather.
