I have one. Personally, I think its great, but you will get comments like that above, people saying they are 'ok'

It really depends what you're after. I went for the colt, because I heard they were reliable, and fast enough for a small car (providing your not a skanger boy/girl racer) Now, from personal experience, I bought my car 3 years ago, its a 97. Ive not replaced one part yet, except brake pads during the service...oh and wait, I did change the tyres too.

But that aside, apart from petrol, tax, insurance... the car has cost me nothing else. Now I don't know if all colts are the same, or if I just got lucky.

They are 1.3 (or do the older ones come in 1.1 too?) so they will be more expensive to tax than, say a micra, but a hell of alot more attractive in my opinion. And honestly, I've driven my sister's micra, they move alot faster too.

So... my vote would be a yes for the colt. I plan to never sell mine and just run it until it stops going. I love it.

The only thing about that model Colt is that it is a fairly old design, they were launched back in 1996 and didn't change much for about 9 years. They were also fairly skimpy on standard equipment unless you get a Jap import.

Engines are pretty bomb proof though and they were well screwed together.

Yes, mine is not a jap and is very basic, but hey, its less things to fail/break/need replacing!!

Great car. Being Japanese the bodywork is a bit light but Colt is very reliable. Reasonably nice styling as well, considering it's age (though no doubt someone will disagree!).

    A safe buy.

Don't think the old shape came in 1.1 (only the newer one). Almost all are 1.3s, an odd 1.6 around.

Thats true, and they have a very poor crash safety rating as a result. Newer designs will also be nicer to drive as they are kinda floaty on corners but I still think they are a nice looking car for what they are.

Just be picky and check it out properly - there will be loads that have been thrashed so aim for a clean unmodified one if possible

nope, the Colt has been around since the 70s.....like most cars the shape has been revised every five years are so.

But in 04 it was given a total facelift > engine, body & chassis

Mitsubishi took over the design of the smart forfour, and basically put the mitsubishi badge on it.

Ive got a 05 and imo its a very under-rated little car, very nippy, good interior space, but one bad point is the A pillars cause a blindspot at junctions.

btw they are going dirt cheap up north

Eh, the model/shape the OP is interested in was launched in 1996 and stayed on sale with little or no changes bar a new front grill and bumper until 2005 when the model you have, was launched. We know the original Colt name was launched in the 1970s.

    1996 Colt:

    2004 Colt:

The reason it didn't change much in that length of time was because Mitsubishi were in financial trouble and could not afford to launch a new model.

Now back to the original topic.

Just to clarify, the current generation Colt is out in Japan since 2003, the European versions didn't start til 2005. I think the reason they ran the old Colt here so long was that they waited till the factory in the Netherlands produced them before axing the old model.

the Colt that ran from 1995, was really only a reworking of the Colt from 1991, with no real advancements apart from different styling.

The interiors, equipment, safety and refinement were definitely from the start of the 90's.

That said, it's a very reliable car, and if you just need that, then it'll be fine. My feeling on them is that because they're all largely the same for 10 years, there's no point in paying the premium for a newer one, if you can get a small mileage older one for far les money.
