No. Just keep proof in your car that it has just been bought and when you get stopped, show the guards and tell them you will produce the tax as soon as you get the log book

could you not ask to put it in as part of a deal?

The new owner will have to wait for the new certificate of ownership before going to the tax office to tax it. So a dealer cant really do it.

You wont have to do anything OP you will just have to pay tax from the date of purchase, no need to go to the Gardai or anything

You only have to pay tax from the date the car was put into your name

    +1

To be a little bit more precise, you will have to pay tax from the first day of the month from the date of purchase (which was recorded on the change of ownership forum)

So if you bought the car on the 30th of April, you have to pay tax from the 1st of April

You can actually bring the log book into the tax office, tax your car there and then and they will send the log book off for you, as far as I can remember from doing this, although it was a long time ago.

I'd presume if you need the pin then you cant, I had to go Q at the tax office for two hours when I got the Integra because they wouldn't let me do it over the internet without a pin

I'd say it's for renewals only - same as the web service.

OP, just buy the car, wait for the log book and then tax it.
You wont be liable for back dated tax (no more than to the start of the month anyway)
