Pensions 101

Ok, basically I have no idea about pensions. There seem so complicated. Can anyone offer any advice? I work in public sector and pay into a pension weekly (very small amount). I am on contract so do not see myself staying there so pension is not very useful. So, I am thinking of me and my future in my old age (am late 20s). Is there such a thing as like a private pension? what is the norm to pay into these?
    Thanks

The Financial Regulator has some useful starter information on its website here. Have a read over these topics and post back if you have further queries.
