hi all, is getting a crown a very general thing a regular dentist can do well or should i ask to be referred to a prosthodontist for it? i imagine there would be a huge price difference obviously. i just want to have the best really, and as its a molar i want it to be very strong (it is rct tooth so will need post and crown). would appreciate any advice!

A Dentist should be fine...but choose on who does a lot of cosmetic work, simply because they will be practiced in any potential snags and glitches involved in crowns.

You won't necessarily need a post and core. I have a rear tooth with a 20 year old root canal and very little tooth left on 3 sides (just amalgam) that was crowned with gold (because that meant the crown could be thinner and the core left bigger) last year.

    It is absolutely super.

I don't know about in Ireland, but in Australia my dentist makes the mould from the old tooth and then has a dental technician make it. He had one re-done as he wasn't happy with it and the fit (yeah annoying, but it didn't cost me) I've had about 3 done and only get them done or dental work done when Im back in Oz - figure I'd rather have the personal who knows my gob and teeth dealing with them!
