I'm of a the certain vintage who prefers wax jackets for the "rough and tumble" of an active outdoor life over and above the newer products available in the shops in recent years. Anyway, due to the ongoing use (abuse??) of my wax jacket, I took it upon myself to rewax it and did everything it said to do on the tin of wax. However, there's always a "however" and it's usually not good in my experience, it seem that in my enthusiasm, I may have overdone things with the new wax, just a tad. Well, perhaps just a bit more than a tad..... what should I do now please in any attempt to remedy the situation and restore the garment to some resemblance of acceptability?

Dump it! It's as old and worn as the Hills of Wicklow. If you are not expert at re-waxing you run the risk of destroying the coat. And that appears to be what you have done.
I would suggest you take a trip to Dublin city centre, Clerys to be exact. They have lovely Wax jackets full and half length in the basement. Barbour is one brand I noticed there. They are expensive but you get what you pay for and a new jacket will probably last you 20 years.

I would have thought that just to keep wearing it would be the best soluation as the wax will weather off over time. You imply that it's not worn for fashions sake but for practicality so who cares if it's over-waxed. Wear it, enjoy it.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Thanks.... I guess I'm at an age also which inclines me to hold onto what I like and my wax jacket (Barbour) is only about 10 years old so I'm going to hold onto it and hopefully it won't be too long before it gets back to normal...
