    Hi all,

this morning I was looking for a house to rent. I've forwarded an email asking if the rent allowance was accepted for an house in Ballymun. The agent has answered me that the housing authority doesn't accept rent allowance in Ballymun regeneration area.
I've searched on internet about that, but I couldn't find anything that would confirm that there is no rent allowance in Ballymun regeneration area.

Does anyone know if the rent allowance is accepted in Ballymun regeneration area? If yes, which area is exactly involved?

    Thanks

depends on what you are looking at.

rent allowance is paid to private landlords, if you have a council house you get a reduced rent anyway because you are on social welfare.

there is a mixture of both in the BRA at the moment. you mentioned housing authority, so its a council house you are looking at, right?

I'm unemployed at moment and in one month I will have a baby. Currently I share a house with other people and I didn't ask rent allowance to pay this room.
As I'm going to have the baby, It would be not possible for me to live in this house as the crying of the baby would disturb the peace of the other housemates.
So,I'm going to rent a flat just for my self.
I'm looking to rent a flat for a private landlord and then ask for rent allowance.I've mentioned the housing authority because the agent of the ad has mentioned to me on the text.
So, is your advice to ask to every ad if they accept rent allowance?

    Hi,

There's no council flats in the Ballymun area that are private rented, unless the occupants are doing so illegally

There are however some "apartment" complexes here (they are just flats like any other, just a fancy name to call it an apartment really) which are privately owned and are rented out by private landlords or their respective agencies.

Private flat complexes in the area I can think of are the new flat complexes on the Ballymun road beside the new swimming pool, the ones above the super valu shops on the corner across from the new civic centre here and the ones up at Ballymun Cross (now renamed a more posher Santry Cross).

I don't think private landlords are absolutely required to accept rent allowance either though maybe someone else here might have some more apt info on that one.

To be honest, in your circumstances I'd suggest you firstly get yourself on the council housing list and if Ballymun is where you want to be then specify that area on the form you fill in with them. The regeneration project here is on hold really due to the economic downturn/recession but, there are empty flats in the area and they are huge inside with (if I remember rightly) 18 hours of permanent hot water and heating for 9 Euro a week - only other bills you worry about are your ESB and rent.

The private flat complexes here are but a stones throw from the council flats so please don't get suckered into some high rent deal in the area from a private landlord if you have options available to you from the council.
I understand you're worried and thinking of getting things sorted before the baby is born but please look at your options with the council firstly especially if you are coming to Ballymun as both the council here and BRL itself are very decent to deal with.

If you are unemployed and a single mother, you have more options open to you but would suggest you contact the citizens information place http://www.citizensinformationboard.ie/ for more and better details.
In fact, honestly, contact them anyway and ask them what they can help you with now, before you go any further, no harm in asking.
