Good stuff - see you up there Saturday and Sunday. Hope the weather picks up.

Any predictions for the winner on Sunday? I see Betfair have Turbo and The Doc as even money joint favourites!

We should get a sweep stakes going here, everyone pick 3 and whoever has the winner gets a lifetime free membership of boards.ie!;)

I pick Turbo, Mick Noone, and Dave Malone.

I'd go for a shoot off between Jim Doherty, Mick Noone, and Mick McGillen with Jason Coffey as a good each way bet:)

Sure I would not bother betting I am going to win it any way:rolleyes::mad::):pac:;);)

Are you saying no one in Sq 23 stands a chance then!!!

I'm scoring the cards with JL, and we can be influenced with a certain amount passed in a brown envolope!

Remember what happened at the mountain last year, Christy was the man and he's on Sq 1, might just be on form again!

Ha ha... see you all there.

BTW dont forget Sporting shoot Bank Hol Monday at the mountain (another shameless plug!).

I've tried bribing JL before - just doesn't work. What price level does your moral conscience go out the window at? Remember, there is a recession so go easy on me. BIG BANG - look away now.:D

Ok then, shall I let everyone know what your score was on Sunday (for that matter what about Big Bangs!! - you know he's watching!!). I have to say the day went very well, with The Doc doing the biz (I was watching the last 25 and the tension the usual nail biting finnish).

My bet was on Seamus, HE WILL RETURN!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 BIG BANG

Hi many thanks for your help on Sunday you were brilliant with that calculator Yes a good win for the Doc. As to my score well we will bury that.
I did not see P&B after to see how he got on How did he do?

Sh1te! 96/283 - four full targets missed all down to mismounts. Same crack as Saturday, 3 full targets missed, again down to mismounts.
I really need to work on my discipline in taking the gun down and starting again if it's not mounted 100% correctly. I should practice what I preach.

Same here I think 94/ 279 DTL is very unforgiving If you miss one target you might aswell go home because there is always someone better. At least in ABT if you score a 90 + you have some chance of winning I am going to Monaghan on Sat and Ashbourne on Sunday might see you there.

wrong attitude, you shoot only one target at a time one station at a time.

look at as 4 lots of 25 try to get a 25/75 and then the 50/150s will start to come before you know you will be up a few points every competition .

with clay shooting its about training your mind as much as getting your stance and gun mount right .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 BIG BANG

Thanks JW for your comment I know it is the wrong attitude to take I have been shooting DTL now for 6 or 7 years and I do not get the same kick out of it as I used to. I have had some coaching recently and found it a great help. I shoot ABT mostly now and get a great buzz from it. Highest score so far in ABT is a 90 Plenty of room to improve

The same is true of all competitive shooting. The minute the mind slips to what the end result might be it all goes tits up.

Sparks had a very good book on mental training actually. It's for golfers, as I recall, but the mental process for each shot is very similar to shooting. Perhaps he could remind me what it's called?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

It's called Every shot must have a purpose by Pia Nilsson; but there are a lot of good books out there on mental training and they're even more individual than pistol grips :D

    JW is right.
It's not a 100 bird competition, it is 100 single bird competitions.
Each target is a competition in it's own right and each target requires 100% concentration on that target only - not the next one or the one before.

i learned this a good few years ago .

it was the irish close ABT i had shot the first 50 straight and was feeling pretty cocky with myself my shooting companion tom murphy told me to go sit in the car and he will get me a tea from the club house.
he sat in with me waiting for the call to start our third line, i remember asking him who was winning ? no one ever won a 100 bird shoot after 50 targets was my answer.
we shot our third station i had 24 kills calling for the last target a low straight bird ,lovely il have you and moved the gun but in my mind i had it shot well i missed .

i had taken my mind off shooting this target and paid the price i fired the empties into the bin tom grabbed be by the arm go sit in the car.

we sat in the car and he spoke to me about the time he shot two 300s back to back and how its a one target game ,every thing must go into the target you call for .

we shot the last station and i shot it straight beating philip murphy by a bird,to win the irish close.

only for him i would have not won that day and what he told has served me well over the years .

thats why i do believe you cant buy experience but you could be in the company of men with it if your lucky.

    Good stuff JW.

I remember buttoning for Tom (before the acoustics) down in Athlone when he shot one of his 300's. I'd worked for his squad on the first 25 and he shot them straight. The other chaps on my squad were beginners so I wouldn't let them button and I ended up doing the whole 100. Needless to say, I shot sh1te as all my efforts went into trying to give Tom 100 good birds. I was shagged by the end of it and was more nervous than he was!

i used hate to button much rather mark .
i shot on a squad with him in athlone he missed his first bird and went on to shoot a 99/297.
i had some savage shoots with tom over the years at flappers

2 x 23's - good shooting. Convert it to 100 bird and you're at 92. A few of them is team material.

Not surprised there was a few there with the weather and the match on.

So JW advice much better than turbo lessons????;)!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 BIG BANG

Turbo's lessons were great Sorted my stance and gun fit but trying to sort out the bit of grey matter is another thing. ie what goes on between the two ears

Sporting shoot was good, meaning only 1 person (guess who!) complained that we had set button B as PULL and Button A as BANG "we always shoot button A first" other than that we set some challenging birds (aimed at shooters achieving +/- 91 therabouts) and scores were good.

Reason for asking where you were shooting, just want to get the remote and button lead back to you (cos if I give it to JD Snr - it might get mislaid!), anyway should'nt you be at work instead of contributing here??
    Take care, David

Always been an early riser! Thanks for the technical advice (smileys!).Buttons, made a fek up JD saw them in my motor, he insited that he would give them to you, alas he then lent the remote to RC at M/Hill for his shoot (he promised me he would get them back to you). JD will give you the lead back clearly marked ACTA, sorry!

Well done on the 90 in Monaghan...... Seems JW's online coaching is having an effect!
