    Hey Gang,

I am buying a Bike Rack for the car.

Needs to have at least room for two bikes, possibly three.

I drive an old 1995 BMW - no roof rack on it nore do I want one. Like to get something that means I am safe in knowing that the bikes won't spill off
when I'm driving down a good road at 80km's an hour.

    Ta in advance

Do you have a tow bar? Would you consider fitting one?

Tow-bar mounted racks are much more convenient than the strap-on variety. Quick and easy to attach and don't damage the cars bodywork. Check out Thule models.

:( No Tow Bar and I would've thought that fitting one would be an expensive operation!

Towbar will probably cost about €250. If you're carrying 3 bikes though it'd be worth it.

i've got thule roof bars and 3 bike carriers and i drove from england to ireland and all over ireland and never lost one i think roof racks are much safer than tailgate or boot fitted racks (how much weight do you think your boot hinges are designed to take over the weight of your boot ?although i do think the manufacturers may have done something about this dont hear of tailgates falling off as much these days)
so it would be roof bars or towbar rack for me.

also tailgate/ bootlid racks the bikes tend to rub against each other and your paintwork.

Crickey 1995 -- I'd just mount weld some steel plates directly to the car and strap the bike on.... Just kidding. I got a boot mounted one for two mountain bikes and it works grand. Haven't used it much though and not really for long distance. I'm going to get a tow bar mounted on or roof racks soon though cuse they are safer. TowBar works well cause you can keep the bike in race ready condition.

OP, I have a boot mounted 3 bike rack suitable for a saloon car that I could sell you at a very reasonable price. I no longer use it as as my new car can't take the old rack, I want to get a roof mount instead.

It's a bit like this one.

PM me if this is of any interest.

Careful here guys. There's quite a barny going on about selling stuff on boards that isn't on adverts. Immediate Ban and 10 lashings IIFC.

    PM answered.

I checked the charter and fear I may have strayed from the ground rules on this one. I can only plead innocence and promise it won't happen again.:o
