was told before by a mechanic that it should be done every 100k (60,000miles)

According to the Passat manual @ 120,000 km...I'm going with that

There are some passats on owner forums that have never had the timing belt changed and they are past 200k miles

I had a look at my belt recently and it's in perfect condition. 106k miles.

I'll be changing it when the weather is a bit better. It's an all day job :(

It should be changed around the 100-110k mark. It's also worth changing the water pump and tensioners.

I had a 2006 Passat and it was due at 120,000km/80,000miles

Does the 2.0 have a chain, I am sure someone told me the new passats had a chain cam.

Not sure about the current Passat, but my Father in Law has a 2001 2.0l petrol and it's 100k kms or 5 years. There is usually a time limit and a milage, whichever comes first.

I wouldn't trust a visual inspection to tell me whether the timing belt is ok. The damage a broken one would do doesn't bear thinking about.

2.0 TDi non common rail unit is belt driven. Newer 2.0 TDi common rail unit is chain driven afaik.

VAG TDi engines generally have a timing belt change interval of 60k miles or 5 years, which ever comes first but to be sure ring a dealer.

According to VW Ireland, its due at 120,000kms. Thats when we get all ours done anyhow.

AFAIK, the 2.0TDi has a belt also, at this interval too.

Really Bazz? I wasn't aware of this. What year did the new common rail unit make its debut?

Made it's debute in the new A4 last year.

It then appeared in the Octavia vRS and new Superb. It was only introduced in the Passat late last year. Available with 110bhp, 140bhp and 170bhp. The 110bhp (Passat Bluemotion) has replaced the ancient 1.9 TDi.

    MkVI Golf also has it.
