I do and for me it helps, really it depends on how you use it. I'd go as far as saying most people don't understand how to use twitter for business.

Rule 1 - Don't try to sell things or yourself. It just doesn't work on social media. Twitter is a relationship tool not a sales tool.
Rule 2 - Build relationships, follow only people you are interested in and want to communicate with. Following 10,000 people is pointless.
Rule 3 - Try to add value, post good links, offer advice, solve problems etc

For me on twitter i connect with new people in my field offer them advice and receive advice and contacts.

I've hired, sourced suppliers, fixed problems on my computers, found consultants all through twitter.

whats the differnce between that and a forum? You can do all that on forums

Its Micro-Blogging. Its originally designed for Bloggers who saw something cool, but didn't want to put up a whole post on their websites. When i first started on Twitter there was only a handful of Irish people on it and most of the folks were from Silicon Valley. Now its become popular i find its usefulness diminished, but still great for keeping up to date relationships.

The Premise is that the maximum is 160 characters.

    That would be me :D

I was told by a business colleague that he found it to be a very useful tool so I signed up for an account but just got "followed" by weirdos and religious nuts so I stopped using it.

Maybe one day I'll give it another shot.

Yeah there's loads of nutters on twitter and people that are trying to sell stuff so they think they need to add as many people as possible. Just follow people who interest you and ignore the rest.

Hey all, ive noticed in the last few weeks a huge surge in this particular question across Irish forums. Fancy dresser has the right idea.

The amount of people you see across twitter just promoting their businesses special offers..Sure we we're even guilty of it when we first started. http://www.twitter.com/justcars

Its all about engaging with other people and putting a face to your business.
There are some sound people out there just shooting the breeze, its about throwing yourself in there and giving advice, opinions etc.

As I say, people will always do business with other people.

Yeah I've been Twittering for a few weeks and business wise I'm only starting to get the hang of it. Sometimes it,s hard to strike the right balance between 'chatty' and professional and hard to avoid being too pushy sales wise!

I am enjoying exploring it though.
