In Germany, the file-hosting service Rapidshare has handed over the personal details of alleged copyright infringers to several major record labels. The information is used to pursue legal action against the Rapidshare users and at least one alleged uploader saw his house raided.
Unlike TPB, I doubt Rapidshare will give a f**k. They'll hand over the IP's without a fight, once asked to by the courts.

Oh, and I don't see any reason why the RIAA can't go through the courts to get the IP address of all the people who uploaded from various countries that the RIAA have agreements with, and prosecute them, aka; Eircoms 3-strike-rule agreement that was done a few weeks back.

What good is an ip address without matching it to a name?

Eircom have said they won't be giving names to match ip addresses, nor will they be blocking sites like TPB without a court order. This agreement between Eircom and the Music Mafia is just to prevent further cases and save money as it costs ISP's a fortune to fight every time the Music Mafia send a cease and desist email. Its an out of court agreement, its not legally binding and it does not involve sharing of any information. I'd doubt Eircom will actually cut off anyone, its a fob off. Absolutely nothing to worry about.

Rapidshare is touted as a safe alternative to torrenting, this just proves that its not.........i'm glad I've started using other means of finding my stuff to download, I'm not an uploader

Aye. Thought I'd let some people know, though.

Its not a surprise if the RIAA/MPAA etc is going after Rapidshare....sadly you have a number of fools who believe they are 100% safe by using this "service".

    How wrong they are

www.rapidshare.de is a different company to www.rapidshare.com (Rapidshare.de is located in Germany whereas www.rapidshare.com is hosted in switzerland). Just look at Rapidshare DE's IMPRINT compared to rapidshare.coms ONE

Except for access.log if someone forgot to turn it off

    973421337.543 11801 YOUR_ADDRESS_HERE TCP_MISS/200 1999 GET http://www.google.com/ - DIRECT/64.208.34.100 text/html

and all these to save effort

    http://www.squid-cache.org/Scripts/ :(

If you think about it ( and could get ip-to-actual-human info ) it must be one of the easiest ways to catch a load of people.

Few minutes setting up a proxy with a bit of bandwidth behind it and they'll come flooding in :(

ok all that is just after flying over me head mate. i can set up a proxy and port forward and thats about it.

    Sorry i'm sleepy ,

When you set up a proxy I take it you mean you set your browser to use a proxy server ( would be a bit pointless otherwise)

To catch people downloading stuff they shouldn't and attempting to avoid detection by using a proxy , just set up a proxy server and allow free access to it.

Then look through the log files it generates.

Squid proxy server ( first one that comes to mind ) writes all access/use in the above format

A quick look through the log file and they have the ip you were using and the time you accessed it.

The tools listed just make it easier to read the log file thats generated.

Lots of other ways but since proxys came up ..

ghey, I just renewed my account for another year at the weekend. I know it's only uploaders at the moment but won't be long until they're after the downloaders.

Which is why I'll be encrpyting my server very soon :)

I don't have a huge amount of movies and tv shows , about 500 - 600 gig , but you can never be too careful.

Please read my post above, Rapidshare.com is not affected, Rapidshare.de is the one affected, owned by a company "RapidTec" in germany, not "Rapidshare AG" which is in switzerland, the one who owns rapidshare.com. Rapidshare.de was owned by Rapidshare AG, but it appears they sold that domain and site to another german company, dont worry about it
